Jake Owen: ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane) Single Review

Jake Owen’s newest release, ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane),’ fits perfectly into his repertoire. Although Owen did release his ‘Greatest Hits‘ album last year, the single is his first new music since his 2016 album, ‘American Love.’ ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane)’ features a delivery very typical of Jake Owen with comparable diction to his previous hits, ‘Beachin’ and ‘Real Life.’ For anyone who is familiar with Jake Owen’s performances, it is natural to picture him strutting across the stage barefoot and smiling confidently while singing this song.

Not only does this single feel a bit familiar because it is characteristic of Jake Owen’s style, but, if you haven’t already guessed it, it is a recreation of John Mellencamp’s 1982 American classic, ‘Jack and Diane.’ John Mellencamp was not shy in announcing his support of Jake’s newest endeavor, posting “Jake Owen got the blessing to release ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane)’ from John Mellencamp Check it out!” John Mellencamp was even credited as a contributor alongside songwriters Tommy Cecil, David Wray, Jody Stevens and Craig Wiseman.

‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane)’ adopts the chord structure from the original and features a very similar Oh Yeah. The nostalgia is taken up a notch because Jake sings from Jack’s perspective looking back in time juxtaposed to Mellencamp’s version which is set in the present. The tense change feels very fitting considering the 16-year-olds in the original song would now be 52. A reminder of the original message, Oh yeah, life goes on, Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone.

Do you close your eyes?  Does it make you laugh?  Do the memories take you back? Six packs and a Chevy Cheyenne, Way back, when I was Jack and you were Diane, is a chorus that we all can relate to as we age. Any music lover has songs that remind them of a specific era, relationship, or event in their lives and this song appeals to that. In addition “I Was Jack (You Were Diane) picks up on the all American feel that is a hallmark of country music and ‘Jack and Diane’. With the lyrics, Blue jean halo hanging off the limb, Two American kids just like them, Every time they played, And it blew us away, it is clear the song is meant to represent the all American kid reminiscing.

Jake Owen isn’t the only country artist giving a nod to Mellencamp in his music. Keith Urban’s ‘John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16’ features Mellencamp’s alias and Old Dominion asks I wonder if Jack and Diane ever made it in their recent hit ‘No Such Thing As A Broken Heart.’ If this song truly is ‘Jack and Diane’ part 2, then it would appear that they didn’t, but I’m sure this won’t be the end the story for America’s favorite couple.

If you are hoping to see Barefoot Jake on tour this summer, currently his only New England show is on July 20th at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom.

Favorite Lyrics:  We were singing every word on the radio, Kinda like the songs could save our souls.

Maren Morris: ‘Rich’ Single Review

With recent ACM nominations being announced, Maren Morris is an artist to be talking about. Following last year’s win of ACM’s New Female Vocalist of the Year, she holds 4 nominations as we await this year’s ACM Awards. Nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year with ‘Craving You’ with Thomas Rhett in addition to artist and producer for ‘Dear Hate,’ Morris has an exciting year ahead of her.

Morris has paved the road for herself building her reputation as a songwriter, where she met her fiancé Ryane Hurd, but decided to take on the task of singing and performing and has built quite the reputation for herself as a singer songwriter.  Morris released her first LP ‘HERO’ in 2016 which contained singles we’ve come to know and love like ‘I Could Use A Love Song,’ ’80s Mercedes’ and GRAMMY winning ‘My Church.’ And finally her 4th single, ‘Rich,’ written by Morris herself, Jessie Jo Dillon and Laura Veltz.

Sony Music Nashville writes Morris is “most at home when bending genre lines” and ‘Rich’ is a perfect display of just that.  Opening with if I had a dollar every time that I swore you off, and a rock R&B feel ‘Rich’ proves itself to be a song full of sass and swagger.  She la-di-da’s us into illustrating how rich she’d be if she really did have a dollar, a dime or a Benjamin for everytime she was lied to, let down or had her heart broken. She’d have head to toe Prada, Benz in the driveway, yacht in the water, Vegas at the Mandarin, high roller gambling, me and Diddy drippin’ diamonds like Marilyn.  Although Morris jokes about how rich she’d be, having promises broken and having more IOU’s than I Love You’s isn’t a situation you want to be in. Some of us may not be happy about it but it’s easily relatable, which makes it an extremely catchy song!  She gets it and jokes, I told myself I wouldn’t do this again but how much you wanna bet I’mma do this again?

Morris will be on tour with Niall Horan this year following her Renegade Revival Run dates after recently announcing his backing from financial firm Sambla.  You can catch the two of them kicking off Flicker World Tour this summer.   Grab your tickets while she visits us in New England this September, find your venue here!

Favorite Lyric: Every promise you made me would have some real value cause all the little lies rolling off your lips is money falling from the sky.

Morris re-released ‘HERO’ in 2017 as a Deluxe Edition which included a few new songs, including ‘Rich’, both are available here!

Kacey Musgraves: ‘Space Cowboy’ Single Review

Ahead of her new album, ‘Golden Hour,’ Kacey Musgraves has released two new songs from the album. One of the newly released singles is ‘Space Cowboy.’ The song is about the heartbreak of a failed love affair and coming to terms with letting go. This is the first new music Musgraves has released in awhile, but the single ‘Space Cowboy’ was definitely worth the wait. ‘Space Cowboy’ was released to country radio on February 23, 2018.

There’s nothing worse in a relationship when one partner desperately wants to leave and not be tied down. ‘Space Cowboy’ is the tart goodbye to that kind of relationship. Of letting go of someone who clearly wants their space, So you can have your space, cowboy. I ain’t going to fence you in. It sees the ending of love as inevitable as the setting sun, I know my place and it ain’t with you. Well sunsets fade, and love does too. Musgraves’s views on love have never been of a happily ever after and she continues to sing about that belief in this power ballad. The song is sad, the ending of a love affair, but it is also strangely comforting. It tells of the strength of letting go of a love that isn’t meant to last and being okay with that decision.

Musgraves is set to release her fourth album, ‘Golden Hour,‘ on March 30, 2017. This will be her first non-Christmas album since her sophomore album, ‘Pageant Material.’ Her first two albums, ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ and ‘Pageant Material,’ both hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and it is expected that ‘Golden Hour’ will receive the same kind of recognition. The inspiration for the album title was partly due to Musgraves experiencing the total solar eclipse in August of 2017, “It felt like this majestic time where God was saying, ‘This is a moment to be present for, to witness and relish in the beauty of this incredible world,’” she says. “That was important for me to include on this record. It’s such an ugly time right now with society and politics, and it could be easy to focus on that. But one thing we could use is a little more love and positivity and pretty colors.” Fans of Musgraves can listen to ‘Space Cowboy’ as they wait for the album to drop later this month.

Kacey Musgraves co-wrote ‘Space Cowboy’ with Shane McAnally and Luke Laird.

This summer, you can catch Kacey Musgraves on tour where she will be opening for Harry Styles. The tour will only be making one stop in New England. They will be at the TD Garden in Boston, MA on June 18, 2018.

Favorite Lyrics: After the gold rush, there ain’t no reason to stay. Shoulda learned from the movies that good guys don’t run away.

‘The Difference’ According To Tyler Rich.

Up and coming country artist, Tyler Rich was raised in Yuba City, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and put a promising career on hold to pursue music. Tyler Rich’s family has always been supportive of his musical interests. During his teenage years his uncle taught him to play the guitar. Interestingly, at a young age, Rich never had dreams of being in a real band. All he ever wanted to do was to play guitar with his uncle and his friends. In a recent interview with New England Country Music he explained: “Every time we had family get-togethers they’d all show up with all their acoustics and we’d just sit around for hours playing songs.” Flash forward several years and now he is far into the journey of being a successful country star.

Tyler Rich sat down with NECM and gave us some insight about his new single ‘The Difference’, which was released in early February. It is a fun, catchy song that will have you singing along to it all day. Rich explained that he first heard ‘The Difference’ when he was three and a half hours into a five-hour long pitch meeting. “There’s a swagger to the song. I knew right away that I needed to have the song. So many things about the song reminded me of things that I write. It felt like me and so many things that my fiancé and I talk about all the time about the difference between certain aspects of love.”

Although this song was written by Rhett Atkins, Devin Dawson, Ben Burgess, and Jacob Durett, Rich feels that it is a song very similar to the over one hundred tunes he has penned. He said that he really connected with this particular song because of the lyrics. In fact, upon getting the song, he told his fiancé, “Babe, I’ve got good news, I think I’ve found a hit. And I’ve got bad news, that you’ve been feeding me these lyrics for two years and I hadn’t written it.” Rich talked about how his fiancé and he frequently discuss the difference between “love you” and “I love you.” His favorite lyrics come from the second verse: “Sittin’ it out and Girl, let’s dance.” Rich goes on to say, “I don’t dance, ever. My fiancé dances when music is not even playing. When you think about somebody that has really made a difference in your life and changes you and makes you different. I think about the fact that anybody can make me dance was massive.”

‘The Difference’ was recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Influential artists such as Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Kenny Chesney have all recorded there. Rich was fortunate to work with Julian Raymond and Lindsay Rimes. “Lindsay and I did some of the pre-production stuff ahead of time. Julian hired this incredible studio band.” As far as the recording process, Rich said “It was such a fun experience. We just knew two hours into it that man, this is just special. Halfway through the first day in the studio doing “The Difference’, everybody knew this is it.”

While on the topic of recording, Rich is expecting his full-length album to be released later in 2018. He said the new album is coming along “slowly but surely. It’s all a very strategic thing. As an artist you want to be able to write ten songs, record them, and release it. But there’s much more to that. We get pitched new songs and just go out on the road and see which ones the crowd reacts to the most. Another song gets written and then that one knocks this one out. Everything’s got its own little flavor. Every song is going to bring a little bit of something new to the table. When you listen to my album I want every song that you hear to be like, yeah this is color-rich. But I don’t want every song that you hear to be like man that sounds like the last one.”

Although his roots are in California, Rich has made the move to Nashville. He had some great advice for a young artist getting ready to make that leap: “Number one, you’re not as good as you think you are! And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Just be kind to people. Be genuine. Nashville is a city that is 100% just about relationships. You can have this amazing talent but if you don’t have the personality or the loyalty – You need that to go with it. If you think you can do it from where you’re at and you’re not in Nashville, you’re dead wrong. Write with any and everybody that you possibly can every day of the week. Everybody, including myself, we have this syndrome where it’s called, you think that the last song you wrote is the best song you wrote! Just keep writing and writing. You’ll surprise yourself every day. You’ll just keep getting better. I cannot stress enough to be genuine. Be nice to people.”

The one person that Tyler Rich has learned the most from since his journey out on the road began is Dustin Lynch. He refers to Lynch as his “Obi-Wan Kenobi!” “Dustin Lynch’s management company reached out to me and said you know, we’ve been watching you online for a few months and think you need to get out to Nashville. You come out here and we’d love to meet with you. The first meeting that I ever took, Dustin was actually at the meeting. He said “You have to live in town. You have to write as much as you can. He never mentioned anything about co-writing at all and I was in town for about a year and once he felt like I had been writing songs that were good enough and that I was ready he took me out on the road. I’ve been touring with him off and on for about two years and I mean he’s taught me almost everything I know about the industry, and about what it takes, and what won’t cut it and what will cut it and I’m still learning every day as I know Dustin’s probably still learning every day. I’m lucky to have a mentor that teaches you what he learns as he goes. It’s funny cause we’re the same age but he’s kinda like my older brother. But we hang out as friends the same age but then when it comes to the industry, he’s my Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

‘The Difference’ goes out to radio in April. Tyler Rich will be visiting radio stations for the next few months promoting the single. His full-length album is expected to be released in 2018. This summer, he will start playing festivals and shows all across the country. We here at New England Country Music, want to thank Tyler Rich for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk with us. Here’s hoping we see him in New England soon!

Brett Young: ‘Mercy’ Single Review

Brett Young has released three consecutive Number One hits from his self-titled debut studio album and he is looking to continue that success with his newest release off the album, titled  ‘Mercy.’  The song is the perfect ballad- Young’s vocals accompanied by a simple piano and guitar. Given the success of Brett Young’s other singles don’t be surprised to see this song climbing the country music charts very soon. The song was released to country radio on February 20, 2018, and was the most added song to country radio that week!

Heartbreaks are painful and difficult to get over, especially when the person who broke your heart continues to call and string you along. The ballad ‘Mercy’ is the heartbroken plea to be allowed to move on from the broken relationship. The song’s simple beat puts the focus on Young’s incredible vocals that pull at your heart.  For those who’ve experienced this kind of heartbreak there’s nothing worse than having the one who broke your heart call you up because they are drunk and lonely. All anyone one with a broken heart wants is to be left alone by the person who did the breaking and Young’s lyrics vocalize that plea, If you go out tonight and get drunk and lonely. Wind up home alone. Please don’t call me. And say you miss me. No. The song is perfect to listen to when trying to get over a heartbreak because it tells you that you’re not alone in feeling the pain of a broken heart.

“‘Mercy is the new single because of the amazing fan response. It’s the feeling you get when someone breaks your heart but won’t let you move on. ‘Mercy’ is a plea to rip the Band-Aid off, and many people can relate to that.” In addition to releasing this new single to country radio, Young also announced on Monday, February 26, that he proposed to his girlfriend Taylor Mills. The couple have been dating off-and-on for the past ten years. Young confessed that much of his debut studio album is about Mills, so perhaps Mills did have ‘Mercy’ on Young.

Young has already had a busy 2018 and it looks like he isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. In an interview with HollywoodLife on January 24, 2018, Young talked about his plans for the upcoming year, “I’m working on a new album that’ll come out later this year, and I’m going to be out on the road with Thomas Rhett and have some other fun things in store!” Given the success of Young’s first album we can be sure that there will be much more success in Brett Young’s future.

Brett Young co-wrote ‘Mercy’ with singer-songwriter, Sean McConnell.

This year, Brett Young will be a part of the Life Changes Tour with Thomas Rhett and Midland. The tour will be in Bangor, ME at the Cross Insurance Center on 9/13 and in Manchester, NH at the SNHU Arena on 9/20.

Favorite Lyrics: If you made up your mind. Then make it. Make this fast. If you ever loved me. Have mercy.

Eric Paslay: ‘Young Forever’ Single Review

For Eric Paslay fans, the wait for new music is finally over. On March 2nd, Paslay released ‘Young Forever,’ the lead single off of his upcoming sophomore album. Co-written by Morgan Evans, Chris Destefano, and Eric Paslay himself, this song has a fun, anthemic feel that makes you want to roll your windows down, turn the volume up, and sing along to every word. The catchy, upbeat rhythm is sure to have concertgoers up on their feet and dancing. Paslay has been searching for a song that rivals the success of his biggest hit ‘Friday Night,’ and this could definitely be it.

‘Young Forever’ is full of nostalgia. It takes us back to the days of our youth when life was much more simple and carefree. Not yet having the responsibilities of adulthood, we could run wild and free around town with our friends. The lyrics paint a picture of growing up with the mindset that the world is full of endless possibilities. This can be seen in the lines, so much faith we could walk on water, we were on top of the world, shooting stars lighting up the boulevard, proud small town boys and girls, wide open roads and unbroken hearts.

It’s safe to say that at some point in our lives we’ve all shared in Paslay’s wish to remain young forever. While, unfortunately, that’s not physically possible we can always remain young at heart, especially with a little help from music. Eric Paslay echoed this sentiment by turning back the clock when he wrote ‘Young Forever.’ He explained that, “It captured the joy, the dream and the hope that made me fall in love with music when I was a kid and it reminds me, every time I play it, why I keep falling in love with music over and over again.” The song’s optimistic nature and good vibes certainly do make it easy to fall in love with. With the release of this spirited new tune to country radio and a new album in the works, the future looks very bright for Paslay.

In what is currently his only scheduled New England appearance, you can catch Eric Paslay at Mixx 360 in Malden, MA on Friday April 6th.

Favorite Lyrics: Kings and queens and make believe, we didn’t need no cash, didn’t need no gasoline. So much faith we could walk on water.

Kelsea Ballerini: ‘I Hate Love Songs’ Single Review

Kelsea Ballerini has lit up the charts before with her chart-topping songs. They ‘were golden, they were fire, they were magic’ – catch the connection there? *Insert ‘Legends’ playing in the background.* Well she’s about to do it again with her recently released single ‘I Hate Love Songs’ from her sophomore album ‘Unapologetically.”

Ballerini’s new single has a lullaby feel to it with calming guitars and riffs that take your mind to another place. It takes a twist on the traditional love song. This ballad that she wrote with Shane McAnally and Old Dominion’s Trevor Rosen, is as groovy as it is sweet. Despite the title, the song is covered in odes to being in love. It’s a tribute to meeting someone unexpectedly, or unapologetically, and you like that it’s gonna happen but hate it at the same time.

‘I Hate Love Songs’ touches upon all the old cliches of being in love and Valentine’s Day – Shakespeare, Ryan Gosling, catching bouquets, letterman jackets, kissing in the rain and roses (‘that die in a week.’) The list goes on and on throughout the 3:11 song. However, Ballerini adds in the emotional factor in the chorus by adding ‘I hate love songs. Yeah I really do. I hate love songs, but I love you.’ She also defines her love (for now husband Morgan Evans) in this one line of the song – the only lovey-dovey line: ‘And I’ll always love you but I don’t have to sing it. ‘For worse or for better’ don’t rhyme. They say I got the right one so now I should write one, but I’d rather just show you tonight.’

Throughout the whole song the tempo is upbeat and the chorus will for sure get stuck in your head as it’s catchiness is contagious. It is an undeniable attest to being in love and has a sweetness behind it’s truth. I mean honestly, glittery cards, cupid, and heart shaped tattoos are totally corny. However, this song is the best counteraction to them all! Kelsea’s voice is displayed in the best way possible, especially on the last verse of the song when her voice cuts through the noise. Her sound is matured and carries a different tone than her other songs.

If you haven’t heard this new song, I highly recommend checking it out as soon as possible- we have no doubt this will be on the top of the country charts in no time! And while you’re at it, check out Kelsea’s album that features singles ‘Legends’ and the title-track, ‘Unapologetically.’

Favorite Lyrics: We were drunk when we met so we don’t know our anniversary, whoops. Oh, and I’m far too vain to kiss in the rain. The clouds, they aren’t numbered to nine…

Jimmie Allen: ‘Best Shot’ Single Review

Jimmie Allen’s debut single ‘Best Shot’ released to country radio on February 20th – and it was the second most added single on country radio that week! Co-written by Jimmie Allen, Josh Landon, and JP Williams, it is just one track off of Jimmie Allen’s self-titled EP. Debuting at number 53 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, it would not be a surprise to see ‘Best Shot’ move up the ranks in the coming weeks.

The song’s opening instrumentals pull you in and have you nodding along before you even hear Allen’s voice. The catchy beat takes the lead throughout the single, but the lyrics have no trouble keeping up. Honesty puts itself front and center as the theme of this track with the powerful opening lyrics I’m just flesh and bone, heart and soul and I’ve earned a couple scars. These words accompanied by the remainder of the first verse are strikingly truthful as they relate to anyone who has experienced hardships in love and is looking to move forward in a new relationship.

‘Best Shot’ continues on a more hopeful note, but the raw honesty is still there. Jimmie Allen continues to admit he has flaws while hoping to be enough. Strong visuals are portrayed with the lyrics When you smile I see the sun sink down on a coast out in California. This might be the perfect line to listen to while we power through the rest of winter, here in New England, hoping for our own warm sunsets complimented by summer love.

Although Jimmie is a newcomer to country radio, he has been working toward his dreams for several years and most certainly has had his fair share of trials and tribulations trying to get discovered as an artist. You can learn more about Allen’s experiences growing up in southern Delaware and moving to Nashville by listening to his 5 part docu-series here. With emotion he tells his story including details about living in his car, struggling financially, and the hard work and dedication he put forth to accomplish his goals. It is clear that Allen is not just giving it his ‘best shot’ in this song, but that he always puts forth everything he has.

Favorite Lyrics: Your good morning eyes, they get me high. Girl you’re always on my mind…

The Swon Brothers: ‘What Ever Happened’ Single Review

‘What Ever Happened’ is The Swon Brothers’ latest single. Released on February 23rd, it has already been featured in numerous country playlists on Spotify, including Wild Country, New Boots, and Backroads Country. The single has an upbeat 80’s vibe that emanates from every aspect of the song. The tone, drums, and guitar all contribute to a nostalgic feel that makes you want to dance. Some may agree the deliberately 80’s sound is fitting with the main lyrics What ever happened to the good old days. Despite the initial impression that this is a fun dance track, a careful listen reveals a serious, but hopeful underlying message.

Brothers Zach and Colton were blunt in choosing lyrics that list an increasing divorce rate, drug addicted mothers, and murders as reasons that We’re running out of the good old days. On social media, The Swon Brothers have not been shy to stand up for what motivated them to write the song together. They tweeted, “No, we for sure remember a time when you bought a concert ticket and didn’t have to worry about getting shot or stabbed for no reason,” in response to a skeptic asking, “Aren’t they too young for a song like this.” In case that left you curious, Zach Swon is 33 years old and Colton Swon will turn 30 this August. Regardless of their age, it is clear that the brothers aimed to make a statement about the times we are living in, while still producing a song that sounds positive.

With the Swon Brothers both being born in the 80’s, it is possible they are also using the song to recall easier times as children. “Moving in reverse got to keep a forward motion,” could be about reminiscing on times of the past in addition to calling for society to make forward progress. The sense of simpler times in childhood may be reflected in the upcoming video for the song because The Swon Brothers are asking for fans to submit their childhood photos and videos. If interested, you can submit your photos here after connecting through email or saving the song on Spotify. Some very lucky fans, who submit photos will be rewarded with a vinyl of the single.

‘What Ever happened’ was co-produced by The Swon Brothers and Brad Hill.

Favorite Lyrics: Choosing sides is just a losing game.

Trent Harmon: ‘You Got ‘Em All’ Single Review

Big Machine Record’s Trent Harmon recently released his second single, ‘You Got Em All.’ This is Trent’s first single to be released after his introductory self-titled EP came out in 2016. ‘You Got Em All’ is said to be the first taste of his upcoming full-length album and is a powerful ballad that grabs your attention from the beginning. The song opens with a soft piano solo and Trent’s raspy voice, but builds effortlessly throughout showcasing his remarkable vocal range. It is no surprise that Trent Harmon is the reigning American Idol winner.

Trent Harmon co-wrote this breakup song with Justin Ebach and Jordan Minton. The song begins thinking about what has been lost.  I hope you found whatever I ain’t found yet. Cause I feel like all my better days are gone. And I think you got ‘em all.  Trent sings about memories in a relationship and reflects on how the happy memories seem unattainable.

The second verse introduces more of the band and Harmon’s powerful vocals. The smiles and the laughs, the greener the grass. Well girl I hope you get ‘em all.  Harmon sings about how he can’t move on.  He can’t stop thinking about what he has lost while waiting for his life to begin again. It can be difficult to wish someone else well after a breakup but Harmon’s lyrics tell us that is exactly what he is trying to do. Listeners will find themselves swaying back and forth as they relate the sad and hopeful story to their own memories. A lot of songs are about love and happiness and it is a nice change to hear about sadness with a twinge of hope along with a melody that helps ease the sorrow.  ‘You Got ‘Em All’ refers to the happier days of the past, the pleasant days of the present and the possibility of love in the future.  This song can help relate the end of a relationship or friendship while hoping the best for someone who has left you. The heartfelt  lyrics accompanied with Trent’s captivating voice will make you put this song on repeat. ‘You Got Em All’ is set to hit country radio on March 19th!

Favorite Lyrics: I’m still waiting on life to being again. Still waiting on love to give a second chance. To stop me and steal my breath the way you did.
