The single has an upbeat 80’s vibe that emanates from every aspect of the song. The tone, drums, and guitar all contribute to a nostalgic feel that makes you want to dance. Despite the initial impression that this is a fun dance track, a careful listen reveals a serious, but hopeful underlying message.
Brothers Zach and Colton were blunt in choosing lyrics that list an increasing divorce rate, drug addicted mothers, and murders as reasons that We’re running out of the good old days. On social media, The Swon Brothers have not been shy to stand up for what motivated them to write the song together. They tweeted, “No, we for sure remember a time when you bought a concert ticket and didn’t have to worry about getting shot or stabbed for no reason,” in response to a skeptic asking, “Aren’t they too young for a song like this.” In case that left you curious, Zach Swon is 33 years old and Colton Swon will turn 30 this August. Regardless of their age, it is clear that the brothers aimed to make a statement about the times we are living in, while still producing a song that sounds positive.
With the Swon Brothers both being born in the 80’s, it is possible they are also using the song to recall easier times as children. “Moving in reverse got to keep a forward motion,” could be about reminiscing on times of the past in addition to calling for society to make forward progress.
