Cody Johnson: ‘Ain’t Nothin’ To It’ Album Review

‘Ain’t Nothin’ To It‘ may be Cody Johnson’s first studio album released, but the Texas native has proven himself a force to be reckoned with. Previously gaining much success as an independent artist, this album continued the trend hitting Number One on the Billboard Country Albums chart. The fifteen song album delivers a 90’s inspired traditional country sound that can stand up today. Cody presents a wide range of songs ranging from sexy to gospel and includes two live bonus tracks. Enlisting prominent songwriters including Chris Stapleton and John Osborne, the ex-rodeo pro turned prison guard delivers with authenticity, singing songs that suit his life journey.

1) ‘Ain’t Nothin’ To It’ – Written by David Lee and Leslie Satcher.
Impression: The album’s title track opens the record with traditional country sound and subject matter. Framed as a dad’s advice to his son, the song touches on how to have a lifetime of love and happiness in marriage.
Favorite Lyrics: Crawl up in that bed right next to her and listen, Instead of having all the answers…

2) ‘Noise’ – Written by Gordie Sampson, Jim McCormick, and Radney Foster.
Impression: Life is busy, full of distractions and things that can get you down, so we need coping methods. ‘Noise’ touches upon the way someone you love can be an oasis away from the stress of everyday life.
Favorite Lyrics: You’re my secret shelter when I can’t find peace. The way you touch, the way you whisper, Way you love and how it lingers, You can make it all go away…

3) ‘Fenceposts’ – Written by Benji Davis and Robert Arthur.
Impression: ‘Fenceposts’ takes a snapshot of a special moment in life and makes it a song. A couple looks at a parcel of land as they dream of building a home and starting their life together.
Favorite Lyrics: With that sun shinin’ through that crystal blue, Sure looks good on you…

4) ‘Understand Why’ – Written by Neil Medley and Randy Montana.
Impression: Cody Johnson explains his brokenhearted struggles in ‘Understand Why.’ Looking for an escape in outer space or through substance, Cody longs to move on from his crushed ‘small town dreams.’
Favorite Lyrics: I wish I had a third floor motel room, On the dark side of the moon, Up there with the satellites in the sky…

5) ‘Long Haired Country Boy’ (feat. The Rockin’ Cody Johnson Band) – Written by Charlie Daniels.
Impression: The Cody Johnson Band covers the iconic Charlie Daniels Band for ‘Long Haired Country Boy.’ Cody brings his own style to the cover, while still maintaining its traditional sound and message.
Favorite Lyrics: The drunkard wants another drink of wine, And the politician wants your vote, me, I don’t want much of nothin’ at all…

6) ‘Nothin’ On You’ – Written by Barrett Baber and Trent Wilmon.
Impression: ‘Nothin’ On You’ slows things down for a love song that passionately showcases Cody’s vocal range. Even when compared to a long list of beautiful destinations, Cody feels that he has the best view looking at his baby.
Favorite Lyrics: I wouldn’t trade places, Long as I’m here with you baby, I’ve got a room with a view…

7) ‘Honkey Tonk Mood’ – Written by Al Anderson and Chris Stapleton.
Impression: Song seven brings a high energy rocking country sound just as you’d expect from a song called ‘Honkey Tonk Mood.’ The lyrics, We’re playin’ here tonight, And then I’m playin’ here tomorrow, I got a whiskey and a tune, may be reminiscent of what it felt like playing bars in Texas, where Johnson got his start as an independent artist.
Favorite Lyrics: If I start to dancin’ ’round, Don’t try and pull me off the floor, I’m just a-kickin’ up my boots, I’m in a honky-tonk mood…

8) ‘Monday Morning Merle’ – Written by Bart Butler, Brad Warren, Brett Warren, and Lance Miller.
Impression: Heartache and country music often go together, but ‘Monday Morning Merle’ presents something unique. Giving a nod to many of his musical influences, Cody works toward getting over his broken heart with music each day of the week.
Favorite Lyrics: And the only way that he can get, Through the days and the regret, Is a song full of truth…

9) ‘Y’all People’ – Written by Chase McGill, John Osborne, and Laura Veltz.
Impression: Dedicated to the ‘CoJo Nation’, ‘Y’all People’ is a nod to Cody’s fan base. Mostly derived from his popularity in Texas as an independent artist, it is not surprising that track nine reminds him of his fans.
Favorite Lyrics: If there’s anybody I want out on the road, When I break down, If anybody’s got a string of, Christmas lights that they don’t take down…

10) ‘Where Cowboys Are King’ – Written by Brice Long, Carlton Anderson, and Wynn Varble.
Impression: ‘Ain’t Nothin’ To It‘ is full of songs that sound genuine coming from Cody, and ‘Where Cowboys Are King’ is no different. It is easy to believe that this song describes home in Texas for the ex-rodeo star.
Favorite Lyrics: Spend a little time with some good old friends, Y’all make it so hard to leave…

11) ‘On My Way To You’ – Written by Brett James and Tony Lane.
Impression: In the first single from this album, Cody belts out the familiar theme: it is easy to see that life’s paths were all part of God’s plan in retrospect. He has finally reached his destiny and ended up with the love of his life.
Favorite Lyrics: Every fork in the road, It was all worth the while, When I finally saw your smile, Every highway, every heartbreak, Every mountain, every mile…

12) ‘Doubt Me Now’ – Written by Casey Beathard and Mitch Oglesby.
Impression: A message for Cody’s haters, ‘Doubt Me Now’ begs for their negativity to help fuel Cody’s fire. Cody delivers with a style similar to Luke Combs, who he will be joining for select tour dates this summer.
Favorite Lyrics: ‘People like you got nothin’ better to do, Than throw rocks at things that shine, Well, you oughta be chasin’ your own dreams, ‘Stead of shootin’ holes in mine…

13) ‘Dear Rodeo’ – Written by Cody Johnson and Dan Couch.
Impression: One of the few songs included on this album that Cody had a hand in writing, includes a heartfelt letter addressed to his past passion. Although he may be talking about being a rodeo star, the universality of the lyrics can be applied to almost anything that was loved and lost.
Favorite Lyrics: I’m jaded, Woah, how I hate it, But somehow the highs outweigh the lows, And I’ll do it all again even though we both know, I’d still have to let you go…

14) ‘Husbands and Wives’ – Live Bonus Track – Written by Roger Miller.
Impression: With just one repeated verse and a refrain ‘Husbands and Wives’ may be short, but its lyrics manage to make a big statement. The song originally released by Roger Miller in 1966 is just as relevant today as it was then.
Favorite Lyrics: The angry words spoken in haste, Such a waste of two lives, Oh, it’s my belief pride is the chief cause, In the decline of the number of husbands and wives…

15) ‘His Name Is Jesus’ – Live Bonus Track – Written by Cody Johnson.
Impression: ‘His Name Is Jesus’ completes ‘Ain’t Nothin’ To It‘ as the only song included with Cody Johnson is the sole writer. Cody celebrates his faith in this gospel song.
Favorite Lyrics: Most famous in history, Things he spoke, the whole world still reads…

Luke Bryan Gets Patriots Super Bowl Shirt But Why?

Summer concert season is coming! We know that with all of the great show announcements we’ve gotten recently. Between the shows in Mansfield, Boston, Gilford and the others across the region, summer 2019 is going to be full of great shows. But with Kenny Chesney already announcing he would not be playing stadiums in 2019, we’ve been waiting for THE show of the summer. And we might’ve gotten it… Let’s get into it.

Earlier tonight, country megastar Luke Bryan posted a video on his Facebook saying, “So this shirt came in the mail today. And it kinda got me thinking…” And with a smirk, he turned the shirt around to show it as a Patriots Super Bowl Champs shirt. While some may have thought he was talking about potentially playing the Super Bowl halftime show next year, all signs point to him returning to Gillette Stadium in 2019. Let’s face it, Luke is a Falcons fan, as he grew up in Georgia. He’s probably still a bit bothered by Super Bowl LI… we don’t blame him. He’s not going to get a Patriots Super Bowl shirt for the hell of it.

This MUST mean Luke is coming back to Gillette this summer! We can’t wait! We’ve been waiting for an epic country show we can tailgate for this summer!

Super Bowl LIII Was The Perfect One for a Country Halftime Show…

We’re just days away from Super Bowl LIII. Our New England Patriots will be facing the Los Angeles Rams at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on this coming Sunday evening. While I’ll be watching for the game, many others tune in for the commercials and many others tune in for the halftime concert. And this year will be no different. But the NFL had the chance to do something they hadn’t done before for a Super Bowl halftime show- country music.

There are very few NFL stadiums in the heart of American where country music lies supreme. Obviously, Nashville is number one. But behind Music City, Atlanta probably is next in line to be home to an NFL franchise AND have thick roots in country music. And Nashville will probably never host a Super Bowl. No offense to Maroon 5, Big Boi or Travis Scott, but c’mon NFL, pay homage to country music for once. Atlanta was the perfect Super Bowl host to do it- unless you decide to play with Mother Nature again and grant Nashville a Super Bowl- which is unlikely.

And who could the NFL have tapped from country to put on one helluva Super Bowl… Well, we’ve been lobbying for Kenny Chesney to play the Pepsi Halftime Show for years. He is one of the few artists of any genre who can headline and sell out NFL stadiums across the country every summer. And let’s face it, he may already have plans to be in the building as he has strong ties with Robert Kraft and the Patriots organization. He was seen in Mr. Kraft’s suite in past Super Bowls.

But there’s also a plethora of Georgia born and bred country artists that would put on a great show. Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt are two icons that come to mind. And we know the argument will be that traditional country would struggle on national television because a lot of people don’t like country. But guess, what!? A LOT OF PEOPLE DO LIKE COUNTRY.

And if that is the argument, we can all be real here. Country music as played on country radio today definitely straddles the genre lines with influences and sounds of pop, rock and hip hop. So why not take modern country artists who flirt with other genres!? Again, the list artists from Georgia who are ruling in the modern country world but can appease the masses is pretty long. Artists like Cole Swindell, Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett, Brantley Gilbert, Kane Brown, Kip Moore, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, to name a few. Hell, throw Florida GEORGIA Line out there with Bebe Rexha to perform their 2018 smash hit, ‘Meant To Be.’ Give us SOME country music.

The last time that the NFL had a halftime show that exclusively featured country artists, it was 1994. Yes, 25 years ago. Seems like long enough. That show featured Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker, Clink Black and The Judds. And only fittingly, that Super Bowl was also in Atlanta! So 25 years later, we’re back in Atlanta for a Super Bowl…

Nearly every year, the NFL has pop stars playing the halftime show. Let’s change it up. If there was any Super Bowl to feature some of country’s biggest stars, it was this weekend. Here we are 25 years later, we’re back in Atlanta for a Super Bowl. What better year could it have been to have had a country halftime show.

The truth is… the NFL dropped the ball here. Pun intended.

Ryan Hurd: ‘To a T’ Single Review

If you didn’t know the name before, hopefully you do by now. 2019 will be an exciting year for one of our personal favorite singer songwriters, Ryan Hurd. This Michigan native kicked off 2019 with all of his current tour stops sold out and two new singles on the radio. We are waiting to see where else he will stop on his tour but in the meantime, we can’t stop listening to his most recent single to be released, ‘To a T.’

Hurd’s newly debuted ‘To a T’ was co-written with Laura Veltz and Nathan Spicer as a follow up to ‘Diamonds or Twine’ which was a wedding gift to his talented wife, Maren Morris. You can check out that review here.  Not only is Morris a muse for her husband but she sings the harmonies on his most recent track.

Hurd is pulling at our heart strings yet again with these intimate lyrics. Take off your makeup, nobody’s around it’s you and me, girl, just let your guard down starts off this sexy song. Stripped down to basics, a t-shirt, white sheets and red wine, how much more vulnerable can you get?

Hurd’s talking about how well he’s figured her out, he knows what she needs and how comfortable she must be to let her guard down and close her eyes. He declares his love with I got you down to a T.

We are impatiently waiting for Hurd’s highly anticipated debut album coming out this year. Stay tuned as you won’t want to miss this one.

NECM’s WCW Spotlight: Carrie Underwood

We, at New England Country Music, want to bring on the new year with a fun series spotlighting women in country music. While the acronym WCW, standing for “Women Crush Wednesday,” is often used for physical attraction, that is not the case here. This series will feature talented women who are crushing it in the country music scene.

Let’s change things up a bit for this week and talk about one of the current powerhouse women in the country music scene, Carrie Underwood. Little did anyone know that the blonde-haired, farm girl from Checotah, Oklahoma was going to become a household name. Growing up in a religious home, Underwood began singing at church when she was quite young and continued singing in local talent shows in and around her home town. She was a well-rounded teenager, playing sports like softball and basketball, cheerleading for the blue and white Checotah High School Wildcats, and graduating as the salutatorian. After high school she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Her academic success continued as she graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Mass Communications. Like many college students, she worked her tail off at various jobs including a zoo, a veterinary clinic, and a pizzeria. She could have never known back then that today, she would have over eleven million Facebook followers. How quickly life can change!

Underwood’s life changed completely in the spring of 2005, after winning the fourth season of American Idol. The soon to be thirty-six-year-old vegan is not only a super talented vocalist, she is also an accomplished songwriter and actress. Her very first single, ‘Inside Your Heaven,’ released in June 2005, was the only single by a solo country artist between 2000-2009 to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Five months later, she dropped her first full length album, ‘Some Hearts.’ It debuted as number one on Billboard Top Country Albums and went on to become the best-selling country album in the United States for 2006 and 2007. It is certified eight times platinum by the RIAA. Two years later, in 2007, Underwood released her second album, ‘Carnival Ride.’ It sold over half a million copies in its first week. It is certified four times multi-platinum. Another two years passed and then Underwood released her third album, ‘Play On,’ which sold over 300,000 copies in its first week. She went on to release her fourth album, ‘Blown Away’ in 2012, her fifth album, ‘Storyteller’ in 2015, and her sixth album, ‘Cry Pretty’ in 2018. Although music has been her predominant career, she has immersed herself in the world of acting. In February 2010, she performed a voice-over on PBS’s classic show Sesame Street. A couple months later, she took on her first major acting role as “Tiffany” on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Her first film role was in the 2011 movie Soul Surfer. And in 2013, Underwood appeared in NBC’s The Sound of Music Live as Maria von Trapp. With six albums under her belt and some time on the big screen, we’re confident that Carrie Underwood will continue to impress us.

Since she came into our lives, Carrie Underwood has sold sixty-five million records worldwide. She has had twenty-six number one singles, co-writing thirteen of them. She has won seven GRAMMY awards, ten Billboard Music Awards, fourteen ACM Awards, eighteen CMT Music Awards, and nine CMA Awards. She has been a member of the Grande Ole Opry for over ten years. Billboard referred to her as “the ultimate Idol success story.” Forbes mentioned that Underwood was “the most successful American Idol winner of all time, with more albums sold and more revenue generated than any of the other contestants in the show’s 15 seasons.” Though she may have had her start on Idol, there’s absolutely no stopping her now.

The happily married mom has two little ones. Isaiah will be turning four next month and Jacob was born just last week! I’m sure you didn’t miss Carrie’s social media pictures that were released shortly after giving birth to Jacob, gorgeous as ever and make-up free! We are so excited for her growing family and also for her Cry Pretty Tour which is set to start in May of 2019. Joining her on tour are two other groups of dynamic women in country music, Maddie and Tae and Runaway June. Be sure to catch them all when they stop in Boston, MA at the TD Garden on Thursday, October 10th.

Maren Morris: ‘GIRL’ Single Review

Has anyone else been curious of where Maren Morris has been since her last single ‘Rich?’ Well, besides touring with Niall Horan, being a CMT Artist of the Year honoree, performing on the CMA’s and just living life, she ended the year with a handful of nominations for the upcoming GRAMMYs and kicked off this year with a big announcement!

We all knew something was coming when Maren refreshed her Instagram. Not only did she announce that she was headlining her own world tour but she released a brand new single, titled ‘GIRL.’

Opening with the electric guitar, Maren’s new ‘GIRL’ continues to bend genre lines and we aren’t complaining. This one serves as a reminder to those who need it, to pick your head up, to not lose your composure, it’s ok to feel down but you should stay strong. Co-written with Sarah Aarons and Greg Kurstin, Morris told The Highway on Sirius XM that she recognizes ‘that we all get caught up in social media comparing our lives to others and it’s just, BS. Everyone goes through their own struggles and everyone is fighting a battle of their own. This song, to a girl or a guy, is just saying no matter what, everyone has anxiety but everything’s gonna be ok.’

GIRL The World Tour hits the road in March with Cassadee Pope and Raelynn. These lovely ladies will be stopping in Boston at the House of Blues on April 27th. This is their only New England tour stop, be sure to grab your tickets before they sell out!

Whether they’re new to the scene and just start to be heard or someone that we think is going to take the next step in their careers, they are all ones you should check out and keep tabs on.

Abby Anderson

Abby moved to Nashville in 2015 after graduating high school early to pursue her dream of country music. She was a member of the 2018 class of CMT Next Women of Country. The Black River Entertainment recording artist released her ‘I’m Good‘ EP on September 7th to rave reviews. The EP featured her debut single ‘Make Him Wait.’ Abby spent much of the year touring with artists like Chase Rice and Russell Dickerson as well as Brett Eldredge and Devin Dawson on the fall leg of The Long Way Tour.

Adam Hambrick

Hambrick really broke into the country music scene as a songwriter, penning some big songs for major acts. He co-wrote Dan + Shay’s ‘How Not To’ and Justin Moore’s ‘Somebody Else Will.’ Inspired by artists like Alan Jackson, Joe Diffie and Mark Chesnutt, he released his debut single ‘Rockin’ All Night Long’ back in September which is crazy infectious. It’s time for the world to hear more of Adam and we think 2019 will do just that.

Brown and Gray

Brown and Gray really stepped into the scene in 2018 with their infectious single ‘Top Down.’ We heard it all over The Highway before FM stations began playing the single. And they really impressed us when we saw them live at the WKLB Street Party last year! We think Brown and Gray continues to ride their hot hand into 2019 and really take off even more!

Carlton Anderson

Chances are you’ve never heard of Carlton. But he is absolutely one of our favorite new artists. The native Texan just has this very genuine sound with his traditional voice and plays with contemporary themes in his debut single ‘Drop Everything.’ He was frequently found playing in Honky Tonks up and down Broadway in Nashville over the past few years and you can still find him playing writers rounds in Music City these days. If you love a great smooth, traditional country voice, you MUST check out Carlton!

Caroline Jones

Caroline Jones is someone who had a fantastic 2018 as she opened for some of the biggest stars in country music and beyond. Artists like Zac Brown Band, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Jimmy Buffett and more! When you’re playing for these artists’ fanbases, you’re destined to have a great year. And she’s definitely riding that wave as she will be touring with none other than Kenny Chesney in 2019! How awesome is that? Oh and did we mention that Caroline hails from Connecticut!? A New England girl going on tour with Mr. Kenny Chesney! Yep, 2019 is going to be a helluva year for this talented artist!

Dillon Carmichael

GRAMMY award winning producer Dave Cobb has worked with some of country music’s biggest and best stars. Artists like Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Jamey Johnson and many more. And add Dillon Carmichael to the list. For a producer like Cobb to latch onto Carmichael says a lot. And it should, as he is such a rising star with this classic smooth baritone voice that hits you right in the feels. You most likely won’t hear Carmichael on the radio as even Chris Stapleton doesn’t get the airplay he deserves, but that shouldn’t stop Dillon from taking off in 2019. We see a huge fanbase coming together and supporting this Kentucky boy through and through based on his undeniable talent alone. Give this guy a listen!

Hannah Ellis

This young lady is another one of our favorite rising acts. She’s opened for everyone from Lee Brice to Russell Dickerson and Jake Owen and she is one of the members of the newest CMT Next Women of Country class! She will even be on the Next Women of Country Tour that will also feature Cassadee Pope and Clare Dunn (and will come through New England!). Her self-titled EP showed so much versatility with piano ballads to up tempo songs meant for live shows.

Hardy

Hardy is another guy who made his first big break in country with songwriting. He is one of the co-writers on Morgan Wallen’s smash hit ‘Up Down’ as well as Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Simple.’ And the guys of FGL knew Hardy had the star power as they invited him to join them on stage several times this summer on their festival circuit appearances. Mitchell Tenpenny

By now, you’ve heard of Mitchell. He took 2018 by storm with his debut single, ‘Drunk Me,’ hitting the top of the charts just a few weeks ago. We fell in love with his sound back in 2017 which led us to bringing him to our festival in August where he absolutely killed it. Now, all we see is videos on social media of massive crowds singing his songs back to him. His ‘Telling All My Secrets‘ album was one of the best debut releases we’ve heard in a long time- which is why you’ll find it on another of our lists that you’ll see in a couple days! Not many people had a better 2018 than Mitchell but we think 2019 could be even bigger. We wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Alcohol You Later’ is the next Number One in Tenpenny’s catalog.

Rachel Wammack

This young lady caught our attention with her mesmerizing vocals and her powerful piano ballads. Her poignant debut single, ‘Damage,’ caught our attention the first time we heard it and we were absolutely hooked. And she showed off her talents while she was on tour with Brett Young this past fall and winter. In a time where country radio needs more female voices, Rachel Wammack is here to answer the call.

Ray Fulcher

You may not know Ray Fulcher by name but you know his work- guaranteed. He just happens to be the co-writer on 8 of the tracks on Luke Combs’ ‘This One’s For You‘ record including ‘When It Rains It Pours.’ Pretty impressive stuff from the Georgia native who is also a performer in his own right. Combs isn’t the only who who has recognized Ray’s talent as he has shared the stage with artists like Old Dominion, Keith Urban, Lee Brice, Kid Rock and many more. He will be joining Luke Combs on his headlining tour this summer- including a show at the Bank of NH Pavilion in Gilford. Riley Green

We fell in love with Riley in 2018 as he captivated us with his debut single, ‘There Was This Girl.’ I mean, this song is so catchy. It’ll have you bobbing your head and singing along on the first listen, guaranteed. Hell, his whole EP is special. He’s an absolute star in the making that is going to take the world by storm in 2019. Trust us.

Ross Ellis

Ross was named a ‘Highway Find’ on Sirius XM The Highway in 2017 and ever since has been a staple on the satellite radio channel. We particularly love his single ‘Ghosts,’ which really shows off his unique voice. Ross has also had some success with songwriting as Tim McGraw cut ‘Neon Church’ last year- a song that Ross co-wrote with Ben Goldsmith and Ben Dennis. He’s set to play the iconic Stagecoach festival in April but we’re expecting even more from Ross in 2019!

Travis Denning

No that isn’t David Ashley Parker from Powder Springs but it is the man behind the debut single, Travis Denning! After a few years of playing bars in Georgia, Travis made the move to Nashville in 2014 where he scored a publishing deal that led him to cuts by Jason Aldean, Michael Ray, Justin Moore and Chase Rice and eventually a record deal with UMG in 2017. Fans love his debut single ‘David Ashley Parker from Powder Springs’ with its upbeat sound and relatable theme of a fake ID. Denning is set to join his fellow Georgian in Mexico later this month for Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa. He also has a headlining tour set for next month and a brand new single, titled ‘After A Few,’ which will be released next week.

Brett Young: ‘Ticket To L.A.’ Album Review

Brett Young’s sophomore album is finally here! In what felt like a long, anticipated wait, Young makes his way back to the charts with ‘Ticket To L.A.’ In as many years as he has albums, Young takes control of his artistry in year two and took the time to define himself with his second album. The thirteen track record has all but three songs not co-written by Brett. With many repeat writers throughout, it’s safe to say Young has found his groove in his sound and style. Young also features the popular and well-known pop/soul singer Gavin DeGraw on a track. So let’s buckle up and get ready for this journey – we’ve got a front row seat with our ticket to L.A.!

1) ‘Ticket To L.A.’ Written by Brett Young, Zach Crowell, and Jon Nite

Impression: In this sweet sounding melody, Brett opens up his sophomore album subtle and pleasant. ‘Ticket To L.A.’ depicts Brett running into a beautiful girl waiting for her plane in JFK airport. He missed his plane to talk with her all night during her delay. He was saying everything to try and get her to stay, but in the end was unsuccessful. On a hopeful note, he does end up getting her number during the midst of this song’s killer instrumentals.

Favorite Lyrics: It was midnight in the middle of JFK. Trying to take her mind off the fallin’ rain, I was saying anything to make her laugh. Never wanted anything so bad…

2) ‘Here Tonight’ Written by Brett Young, Ben Caver, Justin Ebach, and Charles Kelley

Impression: In Young’s first release off the album, he hits the charts running with this delicious hit. Hints of sex-appeal underline this single, partnered with classic Brett Young tones. ‘Here Tonight’ defines the feeling of never wanting to leave your person, and wondering what would happen if you disappeared together.

Favorite Lyrics: We can just stay here in this minute, lose all track of time. Let the world spin on without us for a while…

3) ‘Catch’ Written by Brett Young, Ross Copperman, and Ashley Gorley

Impression: ‘Catch’ is bound to be one of Brett’s greatest songs in his repertoire. The theme of “catching” is present throughout the entire track when he encounters someone who unexpectedly caught his attention. What was expected to be a lowkey night with the boys, turned into his entire plans getting changed because of someone new. Young’s voice is ridiculously charming, but strong in this tune. The instrumentals sound Gavin DeGraw-esque with a twist of country.

Favorite Lyrics: I thought that I’d catch a buzz, catch a game, catch up with the boys, the same old thing. Catch a cab back to my place, then I saw your face…

4) ‘1,2,3 – Mississippi’ Written by Brett Young, Justin Ebach, and Jon Nite

Impression: ‘1,2,3 – Mississippi’ is classic country with the writers bringing to you sweet verses. In order to stop himself from falling hard for a girl, Young says he needs a “mississippi” timeout – meaning he needs time to breathe and take it in before jumping head first.

Favorite Lyrics: I’ma need a 1-2-3, Mississippi time-out right now ’cause I’m fallin’ too fast for you listenin’ to your life story on the hood of a ’64 Cadillac.

5) ‘Let It Be Mine’ Written by Ross Copperman, Shane McAnally, and Jon Nite

Impression: Song five is one to instantly capture the ears of many. The chorus encapsulates the listeners, with Young’s tender vocals taking us on a trip. With calming guitars riffs and soft drums, the listeners will want to turn to Young themselves after hearing these lyrics.  

Favorite Lyrics: If you need someone to call tonight, a place to crash and let your body fall tonight. If you’re lookin’ for a kiss to make it all alright…

6) ‘Where You Want Me’ Written by Brett Young, Jessie Jo Dillon, and Shane McAnally

Impression: Young taps into his versatility with this track when his R&B tendencies take hold. To go hand in hand with the melody, sensuality fills Young’s tone of voice. As a play on words, ‘Where You Want Me’ tells the story of a guy being exactly where the girl wants him to be – in the palm of her hand, however, she still does not want him.

Favorite Lyrics: You live and die by the chase and I can tell by that look there on your face, you look at love like a race and once you’ve won, you’re done.

7) ‘Used To Missin’ You’ Written by Brett Young, Jon Nite, and Jimmy Robbins

Impression: Young takes his listeners down the road of missing someone with this track. Reminiscing is the forefront theme, partnered with light and happy riffs – ironic right?  

Favorite Lyrics: No matter what I do, it just ain’t no use. I just can’t get used to missin’ you.

8) ‘Change Your Name’ Written by Ross Copperman, Matt Jenkins, and Jon Nite

Impression: Young does it again with a multi-genre song by bringing in little hints of John Mayer. It wouldn’t be a Brett Young album without his ballads – and this is going to be one of his best! We’re gonna let the title of this track speak for itself. Give it a listen, y’all.

Favorite Lyrics: I don’t wanna change who you are. I don’t wanna mess with your dreams or get in the way of who you wanna be. No, I, I won’t stop your runaway heart. I just wanna be why you stay…

9) ‘Chapters’ ft. Gavin DeGraw You Written by Brett Young, Ross Copperman, and Gavin DeGraw

Impression: Gavin DeGraw is someone that Young idolizes – so he jumped at the opportunity to work with him on his second album. From the beginning, the listener can tell that this is a piece of work that has DeGraw in it, from the lyrics all the way to the melody. However, Young places him stamp on it with his country twist when the two collaborated on this track. Their voices mesh together perfectly and we hope to see more of this combination in the future. ‘Chapters’ is reflective of Brett’s life and pays homage to where he comes from.

Favorite Lyrics: Truth is that we all got stories, gotta fail on your way to glory. Takes time tryna get it right, but every future has a past…

10) ‘The Ship And The Bottle’ Written by Nicolle Galyon, Chase McGill, and Jon Nite

Impression: ‘The Ship and The Bottle’ can be described as a sultry ballad that is similar to one that we would hear from Kenny Chesney. Young takes a beachier approach to this song, which is different than his usual Cali vibes. This track compares the metaphor of a ship being stuck in a bottle to a girl being held down by the guy she is with. The bottle (the guy) wants the ship (the girl), but all the bottle does is keep the ship from going the places it’s destined to go. In this genius songwriting, Young urges the girl “you just might have to break me” – meaning his heart, but metaphorically speaking he is talking about the glass of the bottle.

Favorite Lyrics: You just might have to break me to do what you’re meant to do. You’re the ship, I’m the bottle, and I can’t do that to you.

11) ‘Reason To Stay’ Written by Brett Young, Jon Nite, Jimmy Robbins, and Emily Warren

Impression: Pop and soulful sounds with a picture of happiness and warmth are brought to you in ‘Reason To Stay.’ Waking up in the morning next to the one you love makes leaving bed very difficult. Young highlights all the best parts of staying in bed together instead of doing the other things they have to do.

Favorite Lyrics: I really like the way your head fits on my shoulder. I hate the way the morning’s always trying to mess this up…

12) ‘Runnin’ Away From Home’ Written by Brett Young, Zach Crowell, and Hillary Lindsey

Impression: ‘Runnin’ Away From Home’ fits in perfectly with this album with its tender instrumentals. On the pursuit to try and find better, Young found himself running away from the one thing that felt like home – and he finds that he was crazy to ever turn away from it. This song can be seen as a reflective counterpart to his previous hit ‘You Ain’t Here To Kiss Me’ – which tells the true story of Young leaving his hometown, after not seeing or telling his girlfriend at the time that he had come home for the holidays.

Favorite Lyrics: I must’ve been crazy, trying to let you go. You were the only one thing my heart has ever known. You were the place I wanna lay my head, instead I’m layin’ down alone…

13) ‘Don’t Wanna Write This Song’ Written by Brett Young, Zach Crowell, and Sean McConnell

Impression: To close out his second album, Young chose to go with another slow ballad (‘Mercy’ closed his debut album). Delivered on this heartfelt track is Young’s voice cutting through the darkness with a solo piano – this is where Brett is at his absolute best as an artist. The pain is evident throughout the lyrics and its meaning behind it cuts deep. A small twist to what appears to be a song about a relationship that just faded to black, is actually about losing a partner or spouse. A small line towards the end of the song is the pivotal moment that solidifies this thought – see if you can find it!

Favorite Lyrics: A heart half full or half empty is half gone either way, with you gone. What went wrong?

We can count on Brett Young to play with our emotions and take them on a wild ride. He delivered an amazing sophomore album, and in the two years that he has been on the radar, he presents to us work compared to those who have been doing it for years. We’re excited for his future in country music. Keep the records coming, Brett. You’re killing it.

Female Artists Lead in Country Grammy Nominations.

Announced last week, Brandi Carlile, Kasey Musgraves, and Maren Morris lead in Country/Americana Grammy Nominations for 2019. Brandi Carlile came out on top of the genre with seven total nominations including those for the cross-genre Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Album Of The Year. Kasey Musgraves raked in six total nominations including one for the cross-genre Album Of The Year. Morris dominated with 5 total nominations due to the success of her collaborations with Zedd on the pop hit ‘The Middle’ and on ‘Dear Hate’ with Vince Gill.

Maren, however, was just the start of country artists receiving nominations in categories for other genres. Chris Stapleton was recognized for his collaboration with Justin Timberlake on ‘Say Something’ for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Willie Nelson received a nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for ‘My Way.’ Other noteworthy nominations include Luke Combs and Margo Price for Best New Artist. 

Women continued to represent in all country nominations, a refreshing change in comparison to the male dominated award shows our genre has come to know.
