Cole Swindell: ‘Break Up in the End’ Single Review

Newly released ‘Break Up in the End’ is the first single off of Cole Swindell’s upcoming third album. Swindell tweeted, “This is one of those songs from the first time I heard it I knew it was special.” It certainly is just that. Co-written by Jon Nite, Chase McGill, and Jessie Jo Dillon, ‘Break Up in the End’ has all the makings of a #1 hit. The lyrics are incredibly moving and heartfelt, hitting you right in the feels. The beautiful acoustic melody compliments the lyrics perfectly, and the guitar solo towards the end gives the song added life.

Anyone who has ever been in a complicated relationship, where the feelings aren’t mutual, can make a connection to the lyrics. It’s clear that this song strikes a chord with Cole Swindell. In an interview with iHeartCountry he explained, “It hit close to home I felt like. The first time I heard it, it just ripped my heart out almost and I was like I have to have this song.” You can hear the emotion in his voice as he passionately delivers the vocals. Cole sings about desperately wanting to make a relationship work, but ultimately he knows that it will never come to fruition. This is particularly evident in the lyrics, I’d introduce you to my mom and dad, say I think I love her when you leave that room, I’d still not take their advice when I say you’re moving in, even though we break up in the end. The lyrics go on to suggest that no matter how heartbreaking things are he would do it over and over, again and again because his love is so strong. This song is an absolute tearjerker, yet it has an amazing quality that makes you want to listen to it on repeat. When it’s all said and done, ‘Break Up in the End’ could be right up there with ‘You Should Be Here’ for the most special songs of Swindell’s career. If this first single is any indication, Cole Swindell’s next album is sure to be a smash hit.

Over the years Cole Swindell has served as an opener for many top-selling artists, but now he’s finally made it big on his own and deservedly so. Cole’s currently out on the road this spring on his first ever headlining tour with supporting acts Chris Janson and Lauren Alaina. You can see the only remaining New England stop on the Reason to Drink tour this Saturday, March 3rd at the Ryan Center on the campus of URI in Kingston, RI.

Favorite Lyrics: Even if I knew you’d be the one that got away, I’d still go back and get you. Even if I knew you’d be my best and worst mistake, oh I’d still make it with you.

You can buy ‘Break Up in the End’ on iTunes here.

Mitchell Tenpenny: ‘Drunk Me’ Single Review

Mitchell Tenpenny released his debut self-titled EP this past Friday and one of the songs on the EP is ‘Drunk Me’ – a catchy song that I can’t seem to get out of my head and I’m not sure if I want to.

‘Drunk Me’ written by Mitchell Tenpenny, Jordan Schmidt, Justin Wilson, starts slow and stays slow for the first few lines before quickly picking up for the chorus. Mitchell’s voice is strong in this song and he projects it beautifully at parts. It is an upbeat song that is distinctively country with a rock presence. John Mayer is a big influence on Mitchell’s work and it is evident in this song. Like John Mayer, Mitchell’s voice is the key to this song, the guitar and drums in the background are present but when Mitchell sings all focus is on his soulful vocals and the impressive range he offers.

The song starts off about cleaning up and getting sober because drunk me can’t get over you. It is a love song talking about how when he gets drunk he can’t get over someone. We do not know who he is singing about but it is evident that she broke his heart. The song is mostly about when he drinks he only thinks about her and tries to call her. We see this in the line baby can you come over, I always find those words at the bottom of 100 proof. It is a good song that is catchy and the lyrics are some that a lot can relate to making this song a candidate to become a hit for this rising artist.

Mitchell comes from country roots and a musical past and it shows with this song. He was born and raised in the country music capital, Nashville TN. Music is in his roots as his grandmother, Donna Hilley, is the former CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Mitchell has already seen success in his writing as he co-wrote Granger Smith’s top ten hit ‘If The Boot Fits.’ With success in writing already, we will see if success in his solo performing career will follow. 2018 will surely be a huge year for the up-and-coming star and we can’t wait to see what he has to show us.

Mitchell’s single ‘Drunk Me’ and self titled EP are available now on iTunes and Spotify.

Favorite Lyric: All those bottles sitting up on the shelf, are just salt on the wound. One sip and I’m picking up the phone trying not to go home without you.

Tyler Rich: ‘The Difference’ Single Review

Tyler Rich, a California native, released his debut single, ‘The Difference,’ last week and it’s a song that you want to play on repeat.

With February being the month of love, at least for some, this song is pure perfection.  Written by Rhett Akins, Ben Burgess, Devin Dawson and Jacob Durrett, ‘The Difference,’ is a love song and you can’t help but hum along to it with a smile on your face. Rich intros us into the song, slow and steady as he hums along and tells us how he’s tired of where the current situation is.   As the tempo picks up, he wants to be more and knows there’s a difference between leading you on and holding your hand. He wants to be the difference.  With an upbeat melody, Rich serenades you with lyrics such as: I want to be the difference, close the distance, be the puzzle piece you didn’t even know you were missing babe.  Listeners will be nodding their heads in agreement, who doesn’t want that one who will be the difference?

If you haven’t given it a listen yet, stop and check it out now–you won’t regret it!  Listen Now!

Although you may spot Rich always sporting his favorite Northern Cali teams, he now resides in Nashville and recently signed with Big Machine Records/Valory Co. Keep an eye out for this one as 2018 should be a big year for him.  Rich has shared the stage with names such as Dustin Lynch, Dan + Shay, Chris Young, John Pardi, Brothers Osbourne, Thomas Rhett and soon will be sharing the stage with Justin Moore at the infamous Ryman Auditorium in May.

And guess what? He’s just like us! Just another proud dog dad, he is obsessed with adorable husky named Abby, who he rescued, and posts all about her on Instagram. Keep up with their adventures here!

Favorite Lyric: I wanna be the difference between ‘hey what’s up’ and ‘what are we gonna do tonight’.  Between”ya she’s cool, we hang out sometimes’ and ‘ya that girl right there, she’s mine’…

Luke Combs: ‘One Number Away’ Single Review

Luke Combs came onto the country music scene not necessarily like a hurricane but left an impression on us all with the release of his first single of that name.   Rightfully so, Combs earned himself a spot on a lot of people’s ‘Must Watch’ or ‘Up and Coming Artists’ lists for 2017 and even a CMT nomination for Breakthrough Artist of 2017.  Proving himself with two #1 hits, ‘Hurricane’ and ‘When It Rains it Pours,’  he has turned a lot of spectators into fans.  And although he made it big this past year, a personal favorite of mine is his 2016 single, ‘She Got The Best of Me.’

Just as he did with ‘She Got the Best of Me’ and ‘Hurricane,’ Combs wins us over time-and-time again as he reminisces over an old love interest.  ‘One Number Away,’ written by Combs, Sammy Mitchell, Steven Andre Battey, and Robert Williford, does exactly that!  With his third single off his debut album, ‘This One’s for You,’ gets you thinking about an ex, wondering what they are doing and if they are thinking of you too.

We have all had a time or two where we find ourselves thinking about calling that one person we maybe, shouldn’t be calling.  The slow intro and each strum of the guitar reels you in creating that feeling of heaviness and gloom that thinking about your ex sometimes leaves you with.  You wonder how they are but then the hook picks up.  The recently released music video displays that rainy day feeling these cords depict so well.

‘One Number Away’ is a song you want to see live. And while he is rounding out his own headlining tour Don’t Tempt Me With a Good Time, he will be joining Jason Aldean on his High Noon Neon tour coming to New England the last weekend of May.  You can check all additional dates here!

Favorite Lyrics: We don’t have to talk, I just wanna hear your voice…

LANco: ‘Hallelujah Nights’ Album Review

LANco’s debut album, ‘Hallelujah Nights,’ was released on Friday, January 19th, with consistent jam-after-jam. After their Number One single, ‘Greatest Love Story,’ this album won’t let you down. Lead singer, Brandon Lancaster, either wrote or co-wrote each of the 11 songs featured.  LANco’s sound flows through each song with the theme of love and living life. ‘Hallelujah Nights’ is extremely relatable, each lyric strokes a memory of your own that keeps you itching for more.

1.) ‘Born to Love You’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster, Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, and Josh Osborne.
Impression: Brandon told Sounds Like Nashville, “You kinda find that the reason you’re really here is because of them, and you were born to love them.”  ‘Born to Love You’ being their most recent single with some feel good music and an ode to love, is also the perfect opening song and sets the tone for their debut album.
Favorite Lyric: Every time you smile, I know why I’m here …

2.) ‘Long Live Tonight’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster and Jason Reeves.
Impression: ‘Long Live Tonight’ is a reminder we all need. As cliché as it sounds, love until you cry, laugh until you cry, stay up to see the sunrise, dance it out and live in the moment so when you look back you know you lived life to the fullest.
Favorite Lyric: This is one of those nights and I don’t want to wreck it with distractions and worries ‘Bout what all could go wrong tomorrow so live in this moment and know that there’s no time to borrow…

3.) ‘Pick You Up’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster, Jeremy Spillman and Ben West.
Impression: The drums and the keys really take the lead on this track.  The melody of ‘Pick You Up’ is easy and feels comfortable, similar to reconnecting with an old love interest. A soft sound that offers you relief and picks you up.
Favorite Lyric: I’ve been driving myself crazy thinking about the good times back when you were all mine. We were flying so high nothing but a blue sky and my passenger seat misses you with me…

4.) ‘Greatest Love Story’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster.
Impression: ‘Greatest Love Story’ is a Number One hit for a reason!  The soft guitar intro paired with vocals hooks you from the beginning. The band joins and you are reeled in.  As the saying goes, ‘If you love something let it go. If it comes back, it’s yours for forever.’  ‘Greatest Love Story’ is exactly that.  We follow the journey of high school sweethearts to college and finally back to the realization that they were meant for the greatest love of all.
Favorite Lyric: ‘Cause I’m what you wanted and you’re what I need, so let’s meet in between…

5.) ‘We Do’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster.
Impression: Plain and simple, life is what it is. You may not have a lot of money, a big house, or fancy clothes but enjoy the time you have and the people you share it with. No doubt that the gentlemen of LANco do.
Favorite Lyric: We don’t got a lot of gas, we don’t got a lot of money, but we got a lot of jokes and we always think they’re funny. It’s the simple things that keep us going…

6.) ‘Trouble Maker’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster, Jeremy Spillman and Jay Joyce.
Impression: ‘Trouble Maker’ is a light hearted, fun song that girls will chuckle at and some guys can relate to.  Strings paired with a tambourine and the unconventional drumming of broomsticks, ‘Trouble Maker’ is one of a kind.
Favorite Lyric: I’m in the band, thought that would get her. But she left with her girlfriends, should’ve known better. 1,2,3,4, there she goes out the door…

7.) ‘Singin’ at the Stars’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster and Jeremy Spillman.
Impression: With an instrumental intro, ‘Singin’ at the Stars’ has a different sound than the rest of the album but perfectly displays the Kings of Leon undercurrent LANco is described to have.
Favorite Lyric: It’s a sweet song and I know it by heart. It’s you and me singin’ at the stars

8.) ‘Win You Over’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster.
Impression: With a slight rock feel, LANco narrates a first date that they show in the movies.  Hand on the knee, butterfly feelings, the challenge of winning the seal of approval.
Favorite Lyric: This must be the feeling that they talk about in movies. Never thought I’d find the one who’d do it to me..

9.) ‘So Long (I Do)’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster, Jay Joyce and Melissa Fuller.
Impression: While ‘So Long’ makes you bob your head, it makes you think back to summer memories. The summer fling, the long nights, the one that got away, the memories of the moments that slipped away and what wondering what if.
Favorite Lyric: And when you get a little buzz and lay under the stars, do you think about us small small…

10.) ‘Middle of the Night’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster.
Impression: The harmonica intros you to this upbeat song that will get you snapping your fingers right along with it. ‘Middle of the Night’ creates excitement and gets your adrenaline pumping.
Favorite Lyric: When this whole word gets you down, there’s a place I know outside of town.  We could get lost and we’ll be found in the middle of nowhere …

11.) ‘Hallelujah Nights’ – Written by Brandon Lancaster, Jay Joyce and Jeremy Spillman.
Impression: ‘Hallelujah Nights’ is about those nights you want to roll down your window, let the wind hit your face and throw your hands up.  The sound soothes you and brings you back to the memory of being purely and utterly carefree.
Favorite Lyric: Hang on to that feeling you never know when you’re gonna feel it again…

LANco’s debut album, ‘Hallelujah Nights’  is available to stream and purchase here.

Drake White’s Got That Fire

While talent is surely a prerequisite to a successful music career, it’s Drake White’s hard work, drive, and most of all, passion that makes his success seem almost inevitable. In sitting down to talk with White, you can see the fire in his eyes, his energy is so contagious that you can’t help but walk away feeling inspired. We got to chat with the Alabama native before one of his last shows of 2017 at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den. He’s played the venue a few times before, and keeps returning in part because of the venue itself, including the professional, friendly, and hospitable staff, and the stage which looks much like what he would want for his own shows someday. “I’ve always had a native side of my character in it, you know, that whole Native American type of juju and vibe is my thing… I feel like I’m outdoors,” he said. But the biggest factor in his return to the Wolf Den is probably the fans. “We’ve had a lot of success up here, there’s a lot of passion for our kind of music.”

No matter the venue, Drake’s ultimate goal is to leave fans with lasting memories. “I’m always trying to figure out a different way to do things, and make a memory, make a moment for somebody like yourself or whoever comes to the show to go,” he said. “Ultimately, they don’t even know what’s really there, they’re just captivated by the moment, by the setting, by the music. They can come out and have a good time and not worry. Our fans are cool and they’re laid back and it’s a good time!”

So as 2017 was winding down, the conversation naturally moved towards reflection. It had been a pretty exciting year for White, he explained. “Playing Fenway Park with Zac, that was just a dream come true. And him coming out and singing with me and jamming with me and really developing that relationship. Then we went on our headlining tour and we sold out New York and Boston, and we got out to California and we just really had a lot of crowds. So this year, one of the highlights was to have these people come to our shows and sell out those shows. The other one was Europe – being in London playing C2C in March. I can’t say I didn’t expect it, we work really hard for what we do so as humbly as I know how to put it, we knew we were going to do well over there but man, that response we had was just amazing.”

Drake also spent some time the past year touring with Kip Moore. “Me and Kip, we’re cut from the same cloth. We love to write and we wanted to tour together for a long time,” said White. He continued to share one of the most important things he learned from Moore, building a core group of fans. “He’s done a really good job at that. He’s got dedicated fans and I would much rather go see someone that has a brand, that has a culture built around them, and knows and is true to that,” said White. Part of what’s built up that solid fan base for Moore is his honesty in both his music and live shows, a major takeaway for White. “Kip does not care, he does not ask permission. He sees the idea, he trusts the idea, and he goes with it. Now, he has a lot of hesitation in other parts of his life, but it makes him this really vulnerable, cool spirit on stage and it’s just, he’s honest.”

So has Drake ever struggled with his own honesty and authenticity? “No, I’ve never struggled with it,” he said firmly. But letting the question sink in a little he began to alter his response, “If I’m 100% truthful… Let me think about this because that’s a great question,” he paused. “I think that struggle is what makes you say, ‘No, I’ve never struggled.’ Does that make sense? I’m honest in the fact that I’ve got this sound in my head that I have through listening to Marshall Tucker Band, 311, and Sublime, and Tupac. All the way from Lynyrd Skynyrd to the Allman Brothers Band. I’ve got this sound – I love dobros, I love harmonicas. So there is a struggle in that, what is the identity? What is the Appalachian-soul-funk-country music-swagger-whatever –  What is it? Getting to that. I’ve always known what I like and I’ve always articulated that well. I was just going to be cool and say no, but honestly, it’s everyday you go in and you have these ideas and it’s up to you to trust your ideas, and you trust your god-given abilities.”

It’s a struggle that’s gotten easier as White puts in work on album number two. After seeing success with his debut album, Drake has found that making the second one is a little different, “In every good way possible,” he stated. “I mean, I’m just a normal guy. You know, you put your clothes on today and you’re dressed up and somebody says, ‘Hey, those are cool boots!’ It validates your boot choice or whatever. You put your sweat and soul into this music and people come up and react to it and say, ‘This helped me through this.’ Well, life’s hard and everybody knows it, so it gives you the confidence, it gives you the swagger to go grab the ball and throw another pitch. So I think that it’s just a more relaxed creative process.”

In addition to the finishing up his sophomore album, Drake White has a few other goals for 2018. “I’m going to learn jiu-jitsu, I’m going to start and I don’t know if I’ll finish my pilot’s license, but I’m going to do that. I’m going to run a couple of marathons…” The look of astonishment must have been clearly written on my face, “The reason I’m saying this is because I just wrote all these things down. There’s power in a yellow notepad and a pencil. I write it down, and you know I just believe it,” he said. “I always ask myself why can’t I accomplish my 10 year goals in a year. And most of the time it’s because you’re hesitating asking somebody what you need to ask them.” he said, adding a story to drive that point home. “I asked Zac after we got through the first run, I was like, ‘Hey I want to open up for you for the rest of the year, can we do that? And can we get paid a little bit more money?’ and Zac said, ‘yeah, sure.’ If you never ask, you don’t know.” Feeling motivated yet?  White admittedly listens to a lot of Tony Robbins and it shows. (And apparently it works, too.)

We all know that music has the power to make us feel something, but my conversation with White was truly eye-opening. He has a well-earned confidence, but doesn’t at all come off as cocky. If you’re not a fan, you ought to be. Check him out on social media or check out a show next time he’s around. “Bring somebody that’s never heard of us, I promise they’ll have a good time… Just be ready for a moment,” he assured. Drake’s also got some new music coming out soon, “as soon as I f*cking know how to get it out.” So keep your ears open for some new tunes. And to the fans who’ve been sticking by him, Drake wanted to give y’all a big shout out and say thank you!

To keep up with Drake, you can follow him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
