Brett Young: Self-Titled Album Review

In Brett Young’s debut studio album, he absolutely nails it with 12 amazing tracks with different stories embedded in each one. With two songs having been already released to radio and become popular songs to listen to, Young is on the path to stardom. The self-titled album picks up right where his six-song self-titled EP left off. The album has a mix of country pop, a little R&B and a touch of style of the artist Gavin DeGraw. With girls swooning over his looks and voice already, they will surely fall in love with him even more after this amazing album of back and forth love songs, heartbreaks, mending yourself after breakups, and trying your hardest.

1.) ‘Sleep Without You’ – Written by Brett Young, Justin Ebach, and Kelly Archer.
Impression: To open up this album, Brett Young chose the instant radio sensation, ‘Sleep Without You.’ With its undeniably catchy beat with lyrics that flirt between the line of fun and sexy, you will be singing this song nonstop! The song perfectly depicts that as long as the night ends with the girl coming home to him, he will be happy. She could go out with her friends and possibly get hit on, but as long as she makes her way home, then he doesn’t care. The single reached Number One on the country charts late last year, so it’s not a surprise that he led the album off with ‘Sleep Without You.’
Favorite Lyrics: Never thought I would be like this, just wide awake waitin’ on a goodnight kiss…

2.) Close Enough’ – Written by Brett Young.
Impression: The intro to this song is a chant of “I can’t get you close enough” with Brett’s voice and a single drum beat – not your typical start to a song but it works unbelievably well in this case. The second track is about knowing everything about the girl you like and wanting to know her more, yet you can’t seem to get any closer than you already are. He is completely consumed by this girl and wants her to be as close to him as possible with every kiss and look she gives.
Favorite Lyrics: I don’t just know you, I know everything bout’ ya. So I just can’t begin to wrap my mind around ya…

3.) ‘Like I Loved You’ – Written by Brett Young and Jesse Lee.
Impression: ‘Like I Loved You’ is the classic girl leaving the boy song. The girl wants to still be friends with the guy and wants him to see other people to help mend his broken heart over her. She wants to still be in his life somehow, but just not in a relationship. However, the boy says that if the girl thinks that he can do this so easily and forget about everything they shared, then she never loved him like he loved her. With its upbeat tempo and catchy riffs, it makes a sad themed song, a little lighter.
Favorite Lyrics: It won’t be long til’ I forget to call every time that I’m drinkin’, and you ain’t the love song I can’t keep from singing…

4.) ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ – Written by Brett Young, Trent Tomlinson, Tyler Reeve, Kylie Schlienger, Brett Charles.
Impression: The fourth song of the album and current single out to radio is sure to be the number one wedding song around the country in the near future. It had been released to Sirus XM Satellite radio over the summer and immediately jumped to the top of their countdown. Featuring soft guitars and Young’s talented, seductive voice, it depicts the perfect love song of reminding a girl just how much you really love her. Ladies, this song will surely take to your heart the second you hear it. Gentlemen, take a listen and win your girl over with some of these pointers from Brett!
Favorite Lyrics: I would be lyin’ if I said that I could live this life without you. Even though, I don’t tell you all the time, you’ve had my heart a long long time ago…

5.) ‘Olivia Mae’ – Written by Brett Young and Ben Carver.
Impression: Young’s voice in ‘Olivia Mae’ is beyond sexy and sweet. His little bit of rasp behind his voice adds the finishing touches behind this lovely song begging for a woman named Olivia. He is trying to persuade her in seeing that they are meant to be and hopefully convince her to marry him. He uses the Mae part of her name as a play on words in saying “Olivia Mae-be I could call you” or “Olivia Mae I?” and so on. Ladies, if your name is Olivia Mae, then you just hit the jackpot with Brett Young singing this song about “you!”
Favorite Lyrics: From where I’m standing I can see the girl I’m meant to love for my whole life…

6.) ‘Left Side Of Leavin’ – Written by Brett Young,  Jimmy Robbins and Jon Nite.
Impression: The middle of the album brings a breakup song that shows how some people deal with it. Young does it again with a fast paced, happy tempo to back this sad themed song. The song tells a story of a guy going to a bar to drink away the pain of a breakup. He can’t stop thinking about her, the mistakes he’s made, what she’s doing now, and all the last time memories that he didn’t know would be the last.
Favorite Lyrics: When the only thing you want is the only thing that you can’t have. When the part that you can’t take is knowing you can’t take it back…

7.) ‘You Ain’t Here To Kiss Me’ – Written by Brett Young, Matt Alderman and Tiffany Goss.
Impression: ‘You Ain’t Here To Kiss Me’ has recently been released to Sirus XM Satellite radio like its counterpart, ‘In Case You Didn’t Know,’ and has also climbed the countdown charts. It’s a story of a guy leaving town on New Year’s Eve to escape the pain of the breakup with his girlfriend. He is surrounded by lovers and the memories that they shared. He turns to alcohol to give him clarity of the situation and provide company during the changing of years.
Favorite Lyrics: Pilot comes on says the year is almost gone, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Looks likes it’s just me and the whiskey, cause’ you ain’t here to kiss me…

8.) ‘Back on the Wagon’ – Written by Brett Young, Josh Thompson and Jessi Alexander.
Impression: To continue with the theme of being broken up, Brett adds ‘Back On The Wagon’ to the mix. A song that deals with hooking back up with your ex repeatedly after you’ve been broken up, Young says that even though the outcome always ends up tragic, they have to get back on the wagon of becoming clean of each other. However, this is a vicious cycle that is hard to break when he stills wants her.
Favorite Lyrics: Tomorrow we’ll do what we should, but tonight is gonna hurt so good. Fallin’ off the wagon…

9.) ‘Makin’ Me Say’ – Written by Brett Young.
Impression: With a jazzy intro feel because of its bass guitars, Brett pumps it up a bit from the last song with a contagious beat and lyrics. This song talks about the hypnotizing way women have about them to get a man to do and say whatever they want – especially when they’re in a little black dress. This is a feel good song that can definitely be added to your car playlist while driving with the windows down.
Favorite Lyrics: When you get a little ticked off, and four letter word slips out of your mouth, I can’t help but laugh. You’re so sexy when you’re mad.

10.) ‘Memory Won’t Let Me’ – Written by Brett Young, Steven Jones and Justin Ebach.
Impression: Ever try to move on from someone by being with someone new, and you can’t seem to shake the feelings and memories of the person you’re trying to get over? Well Brett puts that moment into words with ‘Memory Won’t Let Me.’ He explicitly admits that being with someone else still can’t get his mind to shake his old flame. He realizes that she was the best he ever had and that no one can compete with her. However, to keep from making this a sad song, Young continues with the upbeat tempos and happy riffs.
Favorite Lyrics: She’s so good, but you’re the best I ever had. Tell me how could she ever compete with that. Ocean Boulevard still has my heart…

11.) ‘Beautiful Believer’ – Written by Brett Young, Annie Wildgen, and Jason Adamo.
Impression: In a song that praises the girl, Young explains that she is the only reason that he remains strong and hanging on. She believes in him when no one else does, and in turn this pushes him to be the best that he can be. He wants to make her proud always, and he thanks her for remaining positive when things get hard.
Favorite Lyrics: She gives me strength when mine’s all gone. She always keeps me hanging on. When I feel I’ve lost my way, she leads me home…

12.) ‘Mercy’ – Written by Brett Young.
Impression: To close out the album, Young chooses ‘Mercy.’ With a single piano and his voice, this song is nothing but stripped down, raw talent. The last song is completely different from the first eleven, and it may just be the best song on the album. The song deals with a couple who is experiencing turbulence within their relationship that leaves them on the fence of being together or being apart. Young is begging her to leave fast and with mercy instead of dragging him along.
Favorite Lyrics: Mercy, why you hangin’ on so tight if this ain’t working?
