Old Dominion: ‘One Man Band’ Single Review

Much to the delight of fans, Old Dominion recently released their second single off of their highly anticipated upcoming third album. Written by Josh Osborne along with band members Matt Ramsey, Brad Tursi, and Trevor Rosen, ‘One Man Band’ is the group’s first true love song. In an interview with People Ramsey explained, “I can’t wait to hear what people think about this side of us. I don’t think our fans have heard us show the type of emotion that they will hear in ‘One Man Band.’” We must say we’re absolutely loving this romantic side of Old Dominion. We were hooked from the very first notes. The soft melody, predominantly produced by an electric guitar, provides the perfect backdrop for the genuine, heartfelt vocals.

One of the most special things about ‘One Man Band’ is the lyrics. They’re very creative, and they act as a metaphor that compares playing music alone to being single. Ramsey sings about longing to find a significant other so he’ll have someone to accompany him on his musical journey. This can be seen in the lines, Baby we can take our own show on the road, I’ll lay down the beat, you’ll carry the tune, We’ll get tattoos and we’ll trash hotel rooms, Baby take my hand, I don’t wanna be a one man band. The sense of desperation in the lyrics is a common theme amongst much of their new music say Old Dominion. We can’t wait to hear the rest of the album when it’s released later this year.

You can catch Old Dominion on their Make It Sweet Tour on Friday November 8th at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, RI.

Old Dominion Makes It Sweet At The Big E

If you’re driving through Springfield, MA in mid-late September, chances are you’re going to The Big E. One of the biggest fairs in the country. While most people go for the giant corndogs, turkey legs, grilled sausages and all the other outrageous food and drinks, it’s also one of the best places to see a concert as well. That was no different on this past Saturday, September 15th as Old Dominion played a SOLD OUT show.

With a backdrop of colorful carnival rides, including a giant swing that we stayed far away from, and steam and smoke coming from all the various food vendors, the band took the stage with ‘Song For Another Time’ and ‘Wrong Turns’ – lead singer Matthew Ramsey saying afterwards, “It’s a beautiful night. We sold this place out. Let’s make it a party!

Next on the setlist was ‘Beer Can In A Truck Bed,’ ‘Half Empty’ and ‘Be With Me’ before playing a brand new song that we expect will be on their next album, the song called ‘Smooth Sailing.’ They followed that up with ‘Written in the Sand,’ ‘Said Nobody’ and their huge single ‘Hotel Key’ which featured an extra verse that you don’t hear on the radio or album version. They only place this version live and we absolutely love it. You can find this version on Spotify, if you want to hear it! Before performing ‘Still Writing Songs About You,’ Matthew addressed the crowd again, saying, “We’ve been coming up to this part of the country for quite a few years… That’s right, Go Pats! We’re funs… it’s become really special!

The band followed that up with ‘Stars In The City,’ a song the features Little Big Town on the album, and ‘No Such Thing As A Broken Heart’ to which Matthew saying before, “One of the coolest things about playing this song is playing it in places like Gillette Stadium,. It turns into a big singing along. We missed that a Gillette this year.” After ‘Shoe Shopping’ and ‘Crazy Beautiful Sexy,’ the band played another new song called ‘Make It Sweet.’ And we can tell you one thing, this song is going to be a HIT! Look out for that song soon.

The night came to an end with performances of Kenny Chesney’s ‘Save It For A Rainy Day,’ a song that Matthew and Brad co-wrote, as well as ‘Not Everything’s About You’ and our favorite song to see Old Dominion perform live, ‘Can’t Get You.’ After a short break off stage, the band returned for an encore of their first Number One, ‘Break Up With Him’ and ‘Snapback.’

All in all, it was a great day and night at The Big E. Fans went home with their bellies full of fried food and Old Dominion gave them a sweet ending to their day with one helluva show.

Old Dominion: ‘Hotel Key’ Single Review

Old Dominion recently released their latest single, titled ‘Hotel Key,’ to country radio. It is perhaps one of the best songs off their already popular sophomore album, ‘Happy Endings,’ which debuted at Number One on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart. Those who fell in love with Old Dominion’s classics such as ‘No Such Thing As A Broken Heart,’ ‘Written in the Sand,’ and ‘Snapback’ are in for a treat with this one.

It has been a really long cold winter here in New England, and this tune brings with it a hot summer vibe. It may be the shortest song on the album, but it easily packs a punch. The electric guitar riffs and steady drum beat draw us in as we wait for the lyrics to begin. ‘Hotel Key’ is catchy, upbeat, and fun-loving. It describes the memories of a hotel fling: Neither one of us looking for three little words. Unless those three words was do not disturb. The song goes on with: Wondered if anyone’d miss us if we went away. But this isn’t one of those stories that ends up that way. Back in June of last year, Old Dominion told New England Country Music: “We definitely have some heavier subject matter on this album, but there are still the goofy guys in Old Dominion as we’re still us.” Far from a serious tune, we were singing along to the chorus after hearing ‘Hotel Key’ for the very first time. She kept the hotel key. Slipped it in her purse. I guess it makes her think of me. And that night we left our hearts on our sleeves and the clothes all over the floor. We both know we can’t open the door. She kept the hotel key. The key, in this song, serves as a souvenir that holds all the memories of this special night. One has to wonder, when she slips the hotel key into her purse is it as a memory of a single night of magic, or does it join a stack of others? Old Dominion has really created something good with this one. It is definitely a song that we will hear cranked up loud at the beach in a few short months.

‘Hotel Key’ was written by Old Dominion’s band member Trevor Rosen, lead singer Matthew Ramsey, as well as Josh Osborne. The five member band has gained a loyal fan base here in New England after opening for Kenny Chesney three years in a row. They’ll be here again this summer, at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, ME on August 16th and at the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, Vermont on August 24th.

Favorite Lyrics: We left the lights. We left the crowd. We left the world and locked it out. She left a picture in my head. She left the night I can’t forget, but…
