NECM’s WCW: Jessie James Decker

We, at New England Country Music, are continuing our series spotlighting women in country music. While the acronym WCW, standing for ‘Women Crush Wednesday,’ is often used for physical attraction, that is not the case here. This series will feature talented women who are crushing the country music scene.

This week, we are introducing your country/pop singer/songwriter, reality television personality, and fashion designer Jessie James Decker. The thirty-one-year-old was born in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy. With her dad in the US Airforce, Decker lived all over the US including Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana. She is the oldest of three children. Just when she started to learn to talk, she began singing. She won her first talent contest, performing ‘I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,’ at the age of nine. A few years later, when she was fifteen, Jessie James Decker was already making trips back and forth to Nashville to work on her songwriting.

She signed with Mercury Records and dropped her debut, self-titled country/pop album in 2009. She released two more albums, ‘Southern Girl City Lights’ in 2017 and ‘On This Holiday’ in 2018. One of the tracks on ‘Southern Girl City Lights,’ ‘Almost Over You,’ is a collaboration with country sensation, Randy Houser.

Her musical influences include our recent WCW, Shania Twain, as well as Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and Janis Joplin.

Jessie James Decker had a role in the popular E! reality show Eric & Jessie: Game On, with her husband Eric Decker, an NFL wide-receiver. She has designed and launched, Kittenish, a clothing line with retail stores in Nashville and Florida.

We can’t wait to see where this WCW goes from here.

Jessie James Decker is busy raising her three children and does not have any tour dates scheduled for our area.

To get in the Christmas spirit, be sure to to download ‘On This Holiday,’ on Apple Music here. You’ll find four of Decker’s originals as well as covers of classic’s like ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ ‘Santa Baby,’ and ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas.’

You can stay connected with Jessie James Decker by following her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Stay tuned for our last installment of WCW in country music. It is set to hit our page on Wednesday, December 18th.

Jessie James Decker: ‘Almost Over You’ Single Review

You may recognize Jessie James Decker from her role in the popular E! reality show Eric & Jessie: Game On, with her husband Eric Decker, an NFL wide-receiver. She is a woman of many talents, delving into the competitive world of fashion design, as well as being a gifted singer and songwriter. In October 2017, the creative entrepreneur teamed up with renowned country sensation, Randy Houser, and released ‘Almost Over You.’

Their latest creation is a soulful, yet pop-sounding song. ‘Almost Over You’ describes seeing an old flame, by chance at a bar, and having all of the old feelings of love rush right back. Breakups are never easy, especially after taking some time to be “almost over” the other person. As the lyrics vividly describe: ‘This should feel wrong. I miss the perfume in your hair. Are you leading me on? Would you really even care?’ Decker and Houser sing alternate lines in each verse of this duet. The give and take of their voices mimics the give and take we experience in a relationship. There is beautiful harmonization in the chorus as they sing together: ‘I was almost over you. Wasn’t thinking ’bout you at all. Now it’s like all I can do. Is hold on ’til the last call. Now we’re dancing real close. With your hands on my back. Oh, you got the same kinda something. You always used to.’ The mix of bright electric guitar notes, warm drum sounds, and a hint of piano make this song an atypical combination of country and pop.

Randy Houser is most commonly known for his classic country hits ‘Running out of Moonlight’ and ‘How Country Feels.’ Houser’s country accent is a great pairing with Decker’s sweet-sounding voice. In an interview with Taste of Country, Decker mentioned: “Houser is someone I have known for over ten years. He was one of the first people to take a chance and write a song with me, which actually landed my very first record deal.”

‘Almost Over You’ was written by Sarah Buxton, Abe Stoklasa and Daniel Tashian. It is part of Jessie James Decker’s second full-length album titled ‘Southern City Lights’. Shortly after its debut, the album hit number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart. This song is so passionate, it should be used in a Hollywood movie!

Jessie James Decker is not currently touring as she recently gave birth to her third baby! We wish her all the best with her new addition and hope to see her back on tour soon.

However, you can catch Randy Houser at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA on June 8th.

Favorite Lyrics: I should get gone. I shoulda smiled and walked on by. All the smoke and the neon. Ain’t bright enough to hide your eyes.
