Mickey Guyton: ‘Mickey Guyton’ EP Review

On May 26th, Mickey Guyton will release her self-titled EP via Capitol Records Nashville. The songstress has already received numerous accolades and compliments from Billboard as the “best female voice to come along since Carrie Underwood,” while Rolling Stone recognizes her as a talent who “writes from the heart and sings from the gut.” And NPR praises that “Mickey Guyton has the kind of voice that gives people hope.” The EP includes four tracks, including her top-30 hit ‘Better Than You Left Me,’ and was produced by award-winning producers Nathan Chapman, Dann Huff, and Luke Laird.

1.) ‘Why Baby Why’ – Written by Victoria Banks, Emily Shackelton, and Phil Barton.
Impression: Mickey kicks off her self-titled EP with a heart wrenching song about not being able to let go of love lost. From the first chord, it is no wonder why Billboard said she is the “best female voice to come along since Carrie Underwood,” as her vocals are simply that good.
Favorite Lyric: I’m really good at lying to everyone else. But I just can’t lie to myself…

2.) ‘Somebody Else Will’ –  Written by Luke Laird, Ashley Gorley, and Hillary Lindsey.
Impression: We LOVE this track! From the sound and production to the lyrics. It’s written from the perspective of a girl giving her friend advice after her friend had her heartbroken and that if the guy doesn’t love her, ‘Somebody Else Will.’ The uplifting song has some amazing lyrics and the sound of the song just gives this vibe that if you’re going through heartbreak, it would make you feel a little better. We expect this song to be a single in the future… at least we hope it is!
Favorite Lyric: I know it’s cliche, but you know it’s true. There’s a million little fishies in the deep blue…

3.) ‘Pretty Little Mustang’ – Written by Mickey Guyton, Hillary Lindsey, and Jeremy Spillman.
Impression: It’s subtle, but we love the sound of the banjo in the background. The empowering ‘Pretty Little Mustang’ is simple and straightforward- it describes a confident and beautiful woman putting the top down on her ‘Pretty Little Mustang’ and driving around. It’s the type of song that girls can play when they are driving around town with their friends, singing along with the song blaring through their speakers.
Favorite Lyric: Go on and light up the dark just like a firefly. Drop every jaw in the room when you walk by…

4.) ‘Better Than You Left Me’ – Written by Mickey Guyton, Jennifer Hanson, Jenn Schott, and Nathan Chapman.
Impression: We’ve heard ‘Better Than You Left Me’ on country radio, and it is still climbing the Country Airplay charts. The first single off the tracks describes a woman who is experiencing her ex-boyfriend wanting her back but she’s not interested as she is ‘Better Than You Left Me.’ It’s a beautiful song that is really wonderfully written. Mickey’s vocals bring a depth and maturity that truly enhance the meaning of this song. This song definitely showcases Mickey’s vocals.
Favorite Lyric: Now I love deeper. And I laugh a little bit louder. I smile brighter. And I fly higher…

For a few years now, we have seen a drought of females on country radio. But from what we have seen recently, including from Mickey Guyton, country radio does not have an excuse any longer! Mickey Guyton is an incredible singer with a voice that can compete with any female in country music today. And that’s the truth! If these four songs are what we can expect from Mickey Guyton in the future, the future is bright and promising for the Texas born singer.
