Tyler Farr: ‘Suffer in Peace’ Album Review

In 2013, Tyler Farr released his debut solo album, titled ‘Redneck Crazy,’ which peaked as high as number two on the Top Country Albums Chart with hits such as ‘Redneck Crazy’ and ‘Whiskey In My Water’ on the record. But on April 28th, Tyler Farr will release his sophomore album titled ‘Suffer in Peace,’ which already has one track that has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

1.) ‘C.O.U.N.T.R.Y.’ – Written by Chris Tompkins, Craig Wiseman, and Rodney Clawson.
Impression: While a country duo released a song of the same name, Tyler’s version is much different. In the anthem-like song, the Missouri native explains exactly who and what he is by spelling it out: COUNTRY.
Favorite Lyric: We love our guns, our God, our Jesus, pledge allegiance, too. We bleed in John Deere green, red and white and blue…

2.) ‘A Guy Walks Into A Bar – Written by Melissa Peirce, Jonathan Singleton, and Brad Tursi.
Impression: You know all those jokes that start with ‘a guys walks into a bar?’ Well this track is no joke. The first single off the album, ‘A Guy Walks Into A Bar’ has already had great success as it was certified Gold by the RIAA on April 17, 2015. The song references the common joke beginning but in reality the song is a song about heartbreak. It’s a great song and our favorite on the album.
Favorite Lyric: A guy walks into a bar, orders a drink. Sees a girl that catches his eye. Asks her if she wants another. They fall for each other and end up lovers…

3.) ‘Withdrawals’ – Written by Josh Kear, Gordie Sampson, and Hillary Lindsey.
Impression: ‘Withdrawals’ is another one of our favorite tracks on the album. The heart-wrenching song that depicts how a guy is having withdrawals, as if he has an addiction, to the woman that he has lost.
Favorite Lyric: Whoa, I bang my head against the moon. I bang my fist against the wall. You always used to get me high. Now all I do is crash and fall…

4.) ‘Damn Good Friends’ (Duet with Jason Aldean) – Written by Brent Anderson, Chris DuBois, and Neil Medley.
Impression: Tyler has been on tour with Jason Aldean for just about a year now on so when it came to a song called ‘Damn Good Friends,’ there was one phone number for Tyler to dial when it came to the duet… to Jason Aldean. The song is all about the friends you rely on when you’re in a sticky situation like when you’re stuck in a ditch or if you’re caught dancing with another girl on the dance floor. It’s a good ole’ song about loyalty and friendship. And we love Jason’s contribution to this song and we hope these two perform it together on the 2015 tour.
Favorite Lyric: Friends, damn good friends. They love you like a brother there ain’t no doubt. You know the ones I’m talking about…

5.) ‘Suffer in Peace’ – Written by Aaron G. Barker, Sr. and Phil O’Donnell.
Impression: The title track is another song about heartbreak and it’s really good! Think about growing up in a small town, where everyone knows everyone, and going through a break-up. And you can’t escape the pain in that small town so you just want to leave. Well that is what is happening in this song. The subject wants to leave the town he loves so he can ‘Suffer in Peace.’
Favorite Lyric: Thumb through that Bible Mama gave me. Maybe stumble on some words to save me. You know I’d really like the sound of a mountain breeze. And being somewhere where I can suffer in peace…

6.) ‘Raised to Pray’ – Written by Lance Miller, Adam Sanders, Brad Warren, and Brett Warren.
Impression: This track is another one of our favorite songs on the album! The song is about being young and a little crazy; maybe doing things we shouldn’t do but at the end of the day it’s nothing major, as we were ‘Raised To Pray.’ It’s an anthem-type song, and our favorite thing about the song is truly the lyrics- the quartet of writers did a phenomenal job with this track.
Favorite Lyric: From the outside looking in, we might have been a little rough around the edges. But the devil couldn’t catch us ’cause, hey, at the end of the day. We were raised to pray…

7.) ‘Criminal’ – Written by Dallas Davidson, Rhett Akins, and Ashley Gorley.
Impression: Have you ever guarded your heart and emotions so much to not allow someone to get to you? But there is always that one person who can manage their way to get in? Well that is exactly what this song is about! The song equates someone to bring a criminal who kicked in their door and stole their hear away. It’s a good play on words and with no surprise based on the success of the trio of writers of the track. ‘Criminal’ is another one of our favorites from the album and one that could become a single for Farr.
Favorite Lyric: You kicked my door in and stole my heart away and took all my lonely nights and ran off with my bad days…

8.) ‘Better in Boots’ – Written by Justin Wilson and Dave Pittenger.
Impression: Us country boys, if there’s one thing we like on our ladies, it’s a pair of boots! And that’s what all this flirtatious song is all about! While the guy might like his girl in a tight dress, he likes her ‘Better in Boots.’ Definitely a fun song!
Favorite Lyric: You turn me on, girl, you know you do. But you tear me up even better in boots…

9.) ‘Poor Boy’ – Written by Tyler Farr, Dallas Davidson, Rhett Akins, and Ben Hayslip.
Impression: ‘Poor Boy’ is the first track on the album in which Tyler Farr contributed as a co-writer and it’s a good one about a ‘Poor Boy’ who has only but love to give his girl. We hope this gets released as a single, because it is just that good.
Favorite Lyric: You didn’t worry about what I wasn’t. You didn’t care that I came from nothing. All I could give you is my love and a key to the heart of a poor boy…

10.) ‘I Don’t Even Want This Beer’ – Written by Tyler Farr, Wade Kirby, Phil O’Donnell, and Houston Phillips.
Impression: Everyone has a different way of dealing with a break-up. In this track, the subject of the song is at a bar, drinking away the pain and wondering why is there when he should be trying to fix things and realizing that he doesn’t ‘even want this beer.’ It’s a cool perspective for a heart-wrenching break-up song.
Favorite Lyric: I oughta be dialin’ up her number, sayin’ I’m sorry, can I come over. Makes me wonder what the hell I’m doin’ here, I don’t even want this beer…

11.) ‘Why We Live Here’ – Written by Tyler Farr, Dallas Davidson, and Houston Phillips.
Impression: Farr has come out publicly and discussed the role of his respect for our military at on this song, which is seen at the 1:27 mark. But overall, the song just describes why he lives in a small town
Favorite Lyric: That’s why I live here. Damn right we ain’t going anywhere. Home of the brave, baseball and cold beer. It’s pretty clear, that’s why we live here…

Overall, ‘Suffer In Peace‘ is an excellent album with a number of songs that are written very well and performed by Tyler in a way that many artists would not be able to. With Tyler’s customary growl in his vocals, it gives the songs a different depth. What was most surprising was how many emotional songs are on the album- shows a bit of a softer side to the Georgia native. While Zac Brown Band is set to release their new album on the same day that ‘Suffer In Peace‘ is, this album is not one to overlook! Make sure you get it- you won’t be disappointed!

You can pre-order/purchase ‘Suffer in Peace’ on iTunes here.

Tyler will stop in New England this summer on May 29th in Hartford, CT, as part of Jason Aldean’s tour, and will also play a show at Indian Ranch (Webster, MA) on August 15th.
