The Swon Brothers: ‘Timeless’ EP Review

Since the Swon Brothers’ debut album release in October 2014, the guys have been traveling the country playing countless shows and growing their “Swontourage.” The duo has also spent a lot of time working with other songwriters who’ve helped them grow and improve their artistry. When we spoke with the Swons back in August they said they had been creating a bunch of new music for their next album that they were eager for fans to hear. As Zach and Colton have the utmost appreciation for their fans, they didn’t want to release just anything. They recognize how much the fans have done and what great lengths they’ve gone to to support the duo and so they only deserved the best from the Swons in return. The guys took the time to perfect this album, pouring their hearts and souls into it, and now that we’ve had a listen we can confidently say that it was worth the wait.

After dropping the news in late October that the brothers would be joining fellow Oklahoman, Carrie Underwood on her Storyteller Tour, fans hoped that this meant an announcement of new music would follow. It wasn’t until January 2016 that the pair began to post teasers on social media. The Swons spent some time hyping fans up with first listens and sneak peeks leading up to the EP’s surprise release on January 29th. The power of social media proved itself as ‘Timeless’ hit the number two spot on the Country iTunes Chart in just a matter of hours.

The Swon Brothers’ quick climb up the charts was well deserved as the EP exceeded expectations. Zach and Colton not only had a hand in writing and producing every song on the album, they played most of the instruments you hear on the recording as well. The six tracks on the record show the brothers’ more soulful side without neglecting the fun and lightheartedness their fans love. The EP highlights the Swon Brothers’ evolution as artists, showcasing their incredible talent and ultimately creating a record that feels very genuine.

1.) ‘Just Another Girl’ – Written by Zach Swon, Colton Swon, Jordan Schmidt and Cole Taylor
Impression: ‘Just Another Girl’ is the song that the duo had been previewing at their shows last year and had fans swooning. In this song, the guys are singing what just about every girl wants to hear – that she’s not just another kiss, just another good time, or just another girl. (Fellas, take notes from this one.) Aside from making the ladies feel special, it’s ridiculously catchy. It feels very radio-ready and we wouldn’t be surprised if the guys released this one as a single.
Favorite Lyrics: If you find a keeper then keep her, lock it down boy don’t leave her. Love her like you’re always going to need her, make her a believer…

2.) ‘Nobody’ – Written by Zach Swon, Colton Swon, Micha Wilshire and Rick Ferrell
Impression: The guys slow it down with the second track. This song gives off R&B vibes and really demonstrates that soulful flair Zach mentioned this album had. It describes intimate moments between a couple, reassuring the woman just how wonderful she is. ‘Nobody’ is romantic and sexy – the perfect song for being in love.
Favorite Lyrics: One and one make two, but we’re just one when I’m with you…

3.) ‘Throwback’ – Written by Zach Swon, Colton Swon and Derek George
Impression: ‘Throwback’ appropriately has a nostalgic feeling to it. It’is one of those mood-boosting songs that just feels good. Similar to what the song describes, it makes you want to turn up the volume, roll down the windows, and cruise down the street. It’s a light, carefree song about reconnecting with an old fling from the past. This song is full of playful lyrics and if you can resist tapping along to this song, you might need to check your pulse.
Favorite Lyrics: Girl, we’re like an old mixtape somebody left on pause, all we gotta do is push play and pick up right where we left off…

4. ) ‘Timeless’ – Written by Zach Swon, Colton Swon, Chris Roberts and Jason Gantt
Impression: The title track starts off with the sound of a clock ticking which could come off as a little cliche but it totally works for this song. It’s another upbeat song which describes a girl who is timeless with her ‘Cover Girl style in Levi jeans.’ You can snap along to the first verse and by the time the chorus hits you’ll want break out in a full dance. It would make the perfect tune for a flash mob, if you’re planning one. All jokes aside, the guys deliver on another fun, feel-good song. Good luck getting this one out of your head!
Favorite Lyrics: Always shining, like a diamond, oh that girl, she’s timeless…

5.) ‘Killing Me’ – Written by Zach Swon, Colton Swon and Chris Destefano
Impression: Arguably one of the strongest tracks on the EP, ‘Killin Me’ is powerful and showcases the brothers’ incredible harmonies. The duo co-wrote the song with award-winning songwriter, Chris Destefano, who has penned chart-topping hits for Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Brett Eldredge, to name a few. ‘Killing Me’ is about a relationship that you can’t resist despite knowing that it’s bad for you. The lyrics are both creative and relatable, and there’s a satisfying combination of hard and soft moments which give this track a unique sound. Underwood mentioned that it was her favorite song off the EP and it just might be our favorite too!
Favorite Lyrics: You’re killing me tonight, it’s like you thought this through, you planned the perfect crime, now I’ve got my fingerprints all over you…

6.) ‘You Got Somebody’ – Written by Zach Swon and Micha Wilshire
Impression: The duo closes out the EP with ‘You Got Somebody.’ It’s a song about winning over a girl who can essentially get anyone she wants at the bar. The song starts off slow, fooling the listener into thinking it’s going to be another ballad, but it picks up tempo as it builds to the chorus. ‘You Got Somebody’ has a chorus that makes you want to sing along, you won’t be able to resist echoing the “oooohs” and “tonights” with the bros. It wraps up the record perfectly, embodying The Swon Brothers’ progressive sound.
Favorite Lyrics: They all think that buying drinks will buy a shot, ‘cause they want what you got…

The Swon Brothers killed it with this EP. Since it’s release, social media has been erupting with praises for the record from fans and fellow country artists alike. The duo has continued to engage with their fans online, those who posted proof of purchasing the album were promised follows from the Swons and even had the chance to win a Fender guitar during the Super Bowl. ‘Timeless’ debuted at number 19 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and by the looks of things, it should only continue to climb. It’s obvious from this record that Zach and Colton have a clear picture of who they are and where they want to go. Each and every song on this EP is worthy of being heard by an arena full of people and we can’t wait for our chance to see these songs performed live as the guys make a stop at Boston’s TD Garden on The Storyteller Tour on February 23rd.
