NECM’s WCW: Tenille Townes

We, at New England Country Music, are continuing our series spotlighting women in country music. While the acronym WCW, standing for ‘Women Crush Wednesday,’ is often used for physical attraction, that is not the case here. This series will feature talented women who are crushing the country music scene.

We’re so happy that it’s June and the summer concert season is finally here. This week we are introducing you to Tenille Townes, who happens to have some concert dates later this summer in our area. Townes is a twenty-five-year-old, Canadian-born, country music singer and songwriter. She grew up listening to U2 and Shania Twain in Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada. At the age of five, while many of her peers were playing tag, beginning to recognize their letters, and learning to tie their shoes, Townes started her singing lessons. As she entered her teenage years, Tenille received her first guitar from her grandparents. At the age of fifteen, she dropped her debut single, ‘Home Now.’ Before even graduating from high school, she released her first album, ‘Real.’ Her second album, ‘Light,’ was released in 2013. This WCW joined the masses and travelled the 2400+ miles from home to start anew in Nashville. It took her another five years of honing her craft before signing a record deal with Columbia Nashville.

In 2018, Townes released her latest album, ‘Living Room Worktapes.’ You may be most familiar with her heartfelt and powerful single ‘Somebody’s Daughter,’ which topped Canadian country charts earlier this year. Townes told Wide Open County: “This song is about recognizing the people around us and noticing that we are all more connected that we might realize. We were all once just a kid at a lemonade stand, or a teenager dancing in a high school gym. We all belong to somebody. We’ve all got a story.” Tenille Townes’ story should continue to be a good one as she is planning to release another highly anticipated full length album later this year.

Like many legendary country artists, Townes has already graced the circle wood at the Grande Ole Opry. She said “I’ve sat in the audience so many times, taken the backstage tour, and watched my heroes singing up there, dreaming of what it would feel like to stand in that circle someday. Fast forward to now being able to FaceTime my grandparents to tell them to book their trip to Nashville because I’m going to be playing the Grand Ole Opry was one of the most exciting calls of my life!”

You can watch a little clip about her very special night here.

Though her music career is beginning to take off, it is certainly worth mentioning her charitable giving. When she was a teenager, Tenille Townes started ‘Big Hearts For Big Kids,’ an annual fundraiser set raise money for a local shelter for homeless children in Alberta. To date, she has raised over $1.5 million for this important cause.

Tenille Townes gained even more recognition this year as she was the first to be named one of Bobby Bones’ Class of 2019. She was also mentioned as one of Amazon Music’s “2019 Artists to Watch.” Tenille has opened for Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town’s The Bandwagon Tour. And she is currently joining Dierks Bentley on his 2019 Burning Man Tour. We can’t wait to see where her country music career goes from here.

Lucky for us here in New England, Tenille Townes will be in our area this summer. You can see her at the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, CT on Thursday, August 15th. And at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA on Friday, August 16th.
