NECM’s WCW: Kacey Musgraves

We, at New England Country Music, are continuing our series spotlighting women in country music. While the acronym WCW, standing for ‘Women Crush Wednesday,’ is often used for physical attraction, that is not the case here. This series will feature talented women who are crushing the country music scene.

This week, we are featuring country singer/songwriter Kacey Musgraves. The thirty-one year old grew up in Texas and has one younger sister. Musgraves began showing an interest in music at a young age. When she was only eight, she wrote her very first song for her elementary school graduation. She started playing the mandolin, and before she was a teenager, she could play the guitar. Her family is pretty artsy as her mom is an artist, her dad owns a printing company, and her sister is a photographer!

When Kacey was eighteen, she moved to Austin, TX and was picked up by the independent record label, Triple Pop. Here, she recorded acoustic covers of One Republic’s ‘Apologize’ as well as Miley Cyrus’ ‘See You Again’ and both did well. Musgraves later signed with Mercury Nashville in 2012 and released her first single, ‘Merry Go Round.’ Her debut album, Same Trailer Different Park,’ dropped in 2013. This WCW released three more albums: ‘Pageant Material,’ ‘A Very Kacey Christmas,’ and ‘Golden Hour.’ She has toured with starts such as Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Little Big Town, and George Strait.

Over the years, Kacey Musgraves has taken home six GRAMMY Awards. In 2013 she won the CMA Award New Artist of the Year. A year later, she won the ACM Award Album of the Year for ‘Same Trailer Different Park‘ and a CMA Song of the Year for ‘Follow Your Arrow.’ In 2016 Musgraves won the CMA International Achievement Award. In 2017 she won the ACM Award Female Vocalist of the Year. The list continues in 2018 when she won the CMA Album of the Year for ‘Golden Hour.’ And this past year she took home the ACM Award Album of the Year for Golden Hour.’

We are excited to see where #spaceykacey goes from here.

Kacey Musgraves does not have any New England dates on her current tour schedule but be sure to download her latest album, ‘Golden Hour,’ on Apple Music here.

Stay tuned for our next installment of WCW in country music. It is set to hit our page on Wednesday, November 20th.

Kacey Musgraves Has Her ‘Golden Hour’ at the GRAMMYS

Last Sunday, it was our New England Patriots who stole the show, beating the LA Rams in the Super Bowl. But last night, it was Kacey Musgraves who had quite the night in Los Angeles at the GRAMMYS… She won not one, not two, not three but FOUR GRAMMYS!

Before the show even started, it was announced that Kacey was the winner for Best Country Song for ‘Space Cowboy’ as well as the winner for Best Country Solo Performance for ‘Butterflies.’ She was then later announced, during the broadcast, as the winner for Best Country Album for her 2018 ‘Golden Hour‘ – which was also named Album of the Year at the 52nd Annual CMA Awards this past November. The GRAMMYS win came over great albums from Kacey’s peers… Kelsea Ballerini, Brothers Osborne, Ashley McByde, and Chris Stapleton.

But that wasn’t all! Kacey would also win the biggest honor… The GRAMMY for Album of the Year. ‘By The Way, I Forgive You’ by Brandi Carlile, ‘Scorpion’ by Drake, ‘H.E.R.’ by H.E.R., ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys’ by Post Malone, ‘Dirty Computer’ by Janelle Monáe and ‘Black Panther: The Album, Music From And Inspired By’ by Various Artists were the other category nominees. Quite the group of nominees, but Kacey prevailed taking home the honor. Prior to last night, in the history of the GRAMMYS, only 4 country albums had won Album of the Year. Kacey’s win is the first for country music in over a decade- since Taylor Swift took home the award for her ‘Fearless‘ album in 2009.

What. A. Night. for Kacey Musgraves. Big congratulations to Kacey and her team from all of us here at New England Country Music!

Kacey Musgraves: ‘Space Cowboy’ Single Review

Ahead of her new album, ‘Golden Hour,’ Kacey Musgraves has released two new songs from the album. One of the newly released singles is ‘Space Cowboy.’ The song is about the heartbreak of a failed love affair and coming to terms with letting go. This is the first new music Musgraves has released in awhile, but the single ‘Space Cowboy’ was definitely worth the wait. ‘Space Cowboy’ was released to country radio on February 23, 2018.

There’s nothing worse in a relationship when one partner desperately wants to leave and not be tied down. ‘Space Cowboy’ is the tart goodbye to that kind of relationship. Of letting go of someone who clearly wants their space, So you can have your space, cowboy. I ain’t going to fence you in. It sees the ending of love as inevitable as the setting sun, I know my place and it ain’t with you. Well sunsets fade, and love does too. Musgraves’s views on love have never been of a happily ever after and she continues to sing about that belief in this power ballad. The song is sad, the ending of a love affair, but it is also strangely comforting. It tells of the strength of letting go of a love that isn’t meant to last and being okay with that decision.

Musgraves is set to release her fourth album, ‘Golden Hour,‘ on March 30, 2017. This will be her first non-Christmas album since her sophomore album, ‘Pageant Material.’ Her first two albums, ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ and ‘Pageant Material,’ both hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and it is expected that ‘Golden Hour’ will receive the same kind of recognition. The inspiration for the album title was partly due to Musgraves experiencing the total solar eclipse in August of 2017, “It felt like this majestic time where God was saying, ‘This is a moment to be present for, to witness and relish in the beauty of this incredible world,’” she says. “That was important for me to include on this record. It’s such an ugly time right now with society and politics, and it could be easy to focus on that. But one thing we could use is a little more love and positivity and pretty colors.” Fans of Musgraves can listen to ‘Space Cowboy’ as they wait for the album to drop later this month.

Kacey Musgraves co-wrote ‘Space Cowboy’ with Shane McAnally and Luke Laird.

This summer, you can catch Kacey Musgraves on tour where she will be opening for Harry Styles. The tour will only be making one stop in New England. They will be at the TD Garden in Boston, MA on June 18, 2018.

Favorite Lyrics: After the gold rush, there ain’t no reason to stay. Shoulda learned from the movies that good guys don’t run away.
