The title of Joe Nichols’ newest single, ‘Freaks Like Me,’ may throw off listeners but the meaning and story behind the song tells fans otherwise. The opening line of the song sets the tone for what the song is really about- ‘I always get the door for a lady, I don’t care if she’s four or if she’s eighty.’ The ‘freaks’ that Nichols references are old school individuals like himself and emphasizes how that characteristic is hard to come across in today’s culture.
The Red Bow Records recording artist is having this be the lead single off his upcoming ninth studio album. When country music fans first hear the single, they’ll notice a new sound for the artist, with the song having a loud, heavy beat and traditional country sound. That sound hooked Nichols from the first time he heard the song, and he knew he had to cut it.
The song was actual being held by another country artist as a potential single for them. That artist was Justin Moore, but when Moore heard about how passionate Nichols was about the song, he told him, “Have it, cut it, tear it up!”
Written by Josh Thompson, Monty Criswell, and Lynn Hutton, the song makes it clear that Joe is not putting on a show and what you see is what you get with him. He loves America, respects women, and believes in Jesus, all of which is touched upon in the single.
Favorite Lyric: I believe in the USA, 4 wheel drives, and Jesus Saves…
