Jake Owen released the second single off his upcoming fifth studio album on March 7th. ‘American Country Love Song’ was right on time for the beginning of spring, as hearing it makes you picture warmer weather. Listening to it I felt like I was relaxing under the stars at my favorite amphitheater. While he did not write it, the song is exactly the sound we’ve come to know and love from Owen with spoken words and summery themes.
The song was written by three of Nashville’s biggest songwriters Ashley Gorley, Jaren Johnston and Ross Copperman. The trio has previously collaborated on Billy Currington’s ‘Don’t It’ which went Number One last year. They did a great job of writing a summer anthem without being unoriginal. The song brings everything you expect, but also has a unique edge to it.
Lately, it seems many songs have focused on one couple having their summer romance. This song focuses on how great that summer love is in general. Whether you are on spring break, at a concert, in a field or just hanging out, music always seems to play a role in these amazing stories. What makes the song so great is that it brings back unique memories for each listener. The line ‘Wondering who’s gonna kiss who first’ does a phenomenal job of summarizing the excitement and nervousness of meeting someone new. Everyone’s been there, and in fact the next line is ‘You know what I’m talking about.’ No matter where and when the song transforms us to, we can all agree that we look forward to making new memories singing along to this at one of Jake’s upcoming shows including a stop at the Taste of Country Festival on June 12.
If this song and ‘Real Life’ are representative of Jake’s upcoming album, it will certainly be a must-listen. While full details of the album have not come out yet, Jake has indicated that it will be more of a front to back collection of songs that fit together more so than his previous releases.
