It’s every girl’s dream story: a boy and a girl meet in high school and become high school sweethearts. High school sweethearts turn into a real world couple, and eventually turn into a married couple. To put the cherry on top of this sweet, adorable fairy tale, the boy writes songs about the girl throughout their relationship, and eventually a whole album. If you think relationships and guys like this don’t exist, ladies there is hope! Dylan Scott and his wife are the epitome of this love story. Scott has a new single and album out, all centered around his relationship with his wife. He took the time to talk to NECM and give us the details behind his new self-titled album and new single.
The new single, ‘My Girl,’ is an adorable song written about his wife – his high school sweetheart. Dylan co-wrote 7 out of the 13 songs on the album, all which being about his wife. “We’ve been together for a really long time, it’ll be 10 years this month. She’s actually been a part of my life longer than songwriting has, so when I started writing songs [love songs] they were definitely about her.” Writing songs was not something that came natural to Dylan, he said he had to take some time, find a passion for it and learn the process of it.
Mrs. Scott loves the song ‘My Girl.’ The Mister says, “She’s always happy when I come home and I’m like ‘hey! I wrote a song about you!’” He went on to say that the song is real and it depicts real things that have happened between him and his wife. He prides the song on being very special to him because of its realness. However, the woman featured in the single’s video is not his wife. This actress was also featured in the ‘Crazy Over Me’ video as well. “That’s a good question! People always comment saying ‘oh his wife…’ and I’m like ‘nooo, not my wife,'” Dylan said laughing.
‘Crazy Over Me’ is another song that has been released off of the album that was inspired by his wife. “You can be as crazy as you want to be as long as you’re crazy over me and I loved that concept. I sat down and started writing and thought about all the things that makes me crazy over her,” Dylan describes. And while many of the songs on the album are about his wife, there are some songs that do not pertain to his wife. For instance, ‘Beer Buddies’ is a song for the guys and ‘Do You Think About Me’ is about him and his buddies hanging out on a Friday or Saturday night in a Walmart parking lot. “Don’t ask me why we hung out in a Walmart parking lot, but that’s just what we’d do,” he recalled.
Scott credits SiriusXM satellite radio (Channel 56 – “The Highway” is playing “My Girl”) for helping getting his music out to fans and new listeners alike much faster. “Radio is huge. If a radio station is in support of you and your shows and they talk it up, there are so many more people that come out. Satellite is obviously huge because it reaches everywhere, even Canada.”
Dylan has been very busy with his touring and show playing schedule. He’s played at a mix of clubs, fairs and festivals and even went on tour with Lee Brice earlier in the year. Scott did point out that he and his band do not have a bus yet, so they drive themselves show to show in a van. As the years progress, the show lists get more and more extensive and he loves that. He has played 140 dates this year. “I haven’t had a Saturday off since May, and it’s the day I got married so touring’s been great. I’m really looking forward to 2017,” Dylan mentioned.
With the album being out nearly two months now, the fan reactions have been great. “The fan reaction to the album has been more than what we expected. We play shows and everyone is out there singing the songs and it’s crazy what an album can do. It’s exciting that people get the music and learn it. And hopefully in the next month or two, it will be even more.”
