Cam: ‘Welcome to Cam Country’ EP Review

With a big, bright smile Arista Nashville recording artist Cam is set to make a name for herself in country music with her debut EP, titled ‘Welcome to Cam Country.’ The EP, which was released to digital providers on March 31st, features four songs- all of which she co-wrote with some of the best in the business including GRAMMY winner Jeff Bhasker (known for working with Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, The Rolling Stones, and more!) and Tyler Johnson (known for working with Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, OneRepublic, Miley Cyrus and more!). Both Bhasker and Johnson produced the album on top of each co-writing songs on the EP. And the EP is just a taste of what to expect from Cam’s upcoming full album.

1.) ‘My Mistake’ – Written by Camaron Ochs and Tyler Johnson.
Impression: The first single off the EP, ‘My Mistake’ is a playful and upbeat song about accepting mistakes. The California native told Billboard Magazine, “Instead of trying to avoid all of that, it’s a reminder to me that I’m owning it, and I’m happening to life as much as it is happening to me.” It’s a fun and playful song about a one-night stand that is extremely catchy and addictive and it’s no wonder why it was chosen as the first single off the EP.
Favorite Lyric: Loose track on time on purpose, tomorrow’s gonna be long but its worth it. To feel the spins of alcohol and freedom…

2.) ‘Burning House’ – Written by Camaron Ochs, Tyler Johnson, and Jeff Bhasker.
Impression: Cam tones down the energy in the second track off the album, and instead brings some emotion to ‘Burning House.’ The lyrics are extremely deep and somewhat cryptic, but with the usually bright and cheery Cam singing the track, it gives a unique juxtaposition. The song describes how a guy that Cam had broken up with and leading up to a party that she knew she was going to see him at, she began having dreams about him in a ‘Burning House,’ and instead of leaving him to die alone, she stayed with him. It’s a beautiful song with some really amazing vocals.
Favorite Lyric: Love isn’t all that it seems I did you wrong. I’ll stay here with you until this dream is gone…

3.) ‘Half Broke Heart’ – Written by Camaron Ochs, Luke Laird, and Tyler Johnson.
Impression: We LOVE the sound of this song! From the keys in the beginning of the track to the banjo that can be heard throughout the song to Cam’s amazing vocals. ‘Half Broke Heart’ is a track that is relatable and for that reason, it will resonate with fans. We’ve all been in those relationships where we may not have been in love but still had feelings for the person and when they decide to call it off, it still stings. And that’s what this track is all about as Cam says in the first verse, “I wasn’t looking for a ring, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting.”
Favorite Lyric: A half cold beer ain’t cold. I’ll be back soon is still gone. A half-smoked cigarette’s still smoked. And a half broke heart’s still broke…

4.) ‘Runaway Train’ – Written by Camaron Ochs, Anders Mouridsen, and Jeff Bhasker.
Impression: Holy tempo! ‘Runaway Train’ is 3 minutes of high-tempo lyrics and music that equates a woman who is now a ‘Runaway Train,’ out of control and on a path of destruction after finding out her man had been lying to her about things. The sweet and bright Cam isn’t so sweet and bright in ‘Runaway Train.’
Favorite Lyric: My pistons are pounding, brakes are screaming your name. And when there’s nothing but wreckage and flames. And your misery is all that remains, I’ll feel human again…

For a debut EP, Cam shows a lot of maturity in both her vocals and songwriting. Her lyrics are deep and sometimes mysterious. She brings complexity to simplicity. And her vocals, wow. On first listen, you can hear a bit of Miranda Lambert in her voice, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. With these four songs, we’re excited to see what the future holds for Cam’s full length album. With the talent Cam has, she’s only adding and strengthening the force of females in country music today.
