Joe Nichols is giving his fans a little taste of his new album by recently releasing a new teaser single ‘Undone.’ It has been a little over a year since Nichols has released new music and his fans are patiently awaiting the up and coming release of his ninth studio album. He was excited to talk to NECM and shed some insight on what the fans should expect from the new album and his new little twist on the record.
Nichols said his new work “will be a lot like ‘Crickets’ [his eighth studio album]. There will be lots of single choices and a lot of stuff that are made for the radio that feels like it’s familiar. At the same time there will be some deep moments that may or may not be singles but feel like pretty important parts of the record.” He mentioned that there will be a lot of stuff that mimics ‘Undone,’ the first single he chose to release from the new album, and Joe hopes there will be “a little something for everybody.” This new album really strips down and shows a more romantic side to Nichols but also maintains a fun energy.
Addressing the talk of this album being sexier, Nichols definitely agrees. “There are a few songs on here that are more one on one rather than ‘we’re gonna have a good time and drink some beer!’ It’s more of a strip down, in the bedroom like ‘Undone’ or another song called ‘Breathless’. Those songs make it a different feeling record.”
Joe’s success continues to grow everyday because of his fans. He has created some new sounding music and his fans have remained loyal to him and his sound specifically with his hit singles ‘Sunny and 75’ and ‘Yeah.’ He credits his success to his fans by saying “I’m very appreciative of the new fans and the fans that have been here a long time.’ When asked if he liked to switch things up to keep fans interested or to stick to whatever worked best the last time, he said he did a little bit of both. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it! But I am willing to expand a bit.” For example, his repeated work with Micky Jack Cones is something that works for him. Nichols credits Cones for a being a hard worker and always on his game. “I love doing vocals with Mickey. I think he has some of the best vocals I’ve ever done.”
‘Undone’ was chosen as the next single released off the record because it felt like a hit from the start. “Everyone agreed on it and it felt like the right thing to do. It’s that simple.” ‘We All Carry Something’ and ‘This Side of The River’ are two songs that Joe is particularly excited for the fans to hear. ‘We All Carry Something’ is a song more personal to Joe because it represents the past. “Everybody has a past or has climbed out of something into their life and carries it around with them; it’s part of who they are and that’s what makes it special to me.” He also included a cover, with his own twist to it, of Sir Mix A Lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’ that he is dying for the fans to hear as well. His fans can expect a variety of different songs on the new record.
Nichols is excited to tour in honor of the new music. “I’m really excited just to be relevant! That’s what’s exciting. That’s the thing with music, people come and go and I’ve been here for a few years now and it’s pretty great. I’m getting to do something I love.” He has a few New England dates on his touring schedule coming up as well! Joe says he is shooting for a release of the album before the end of the year.
