Take a listen to Casey Derhak and you’ll get addicted to his fun beats, upbeat tempo, and playful lyrics. It’s not ‘bro-country’ that you hear; it’s ‘flow-country,’ as the Floridian calls it. It’s the type of music you’d think of with bare feet around the bonfire that just makes you feel good. Quite frankly, it’s who Casey Derhak is. Back in 2014, he told New England Country Music, “If I sounded like George Strait, I would be George Strait. But I’m not. You got to be yourself and play to your strengths.”
Derhak is originally a New England native, born in Portsmouth, NH. But after moving to Florida as a kid, he adopted that island-like lifestyle and that vibe that you may hear in reggae, as well as in country music from artists like Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington and Jake Owen. And listening to his music, you will be able to hear that his music is inspired by that vibe and the lifestyle.
That is no different with his brand new single, ‘Back Beat,’ which was released just yesterday, February 2nd. Modern country fans will love the funky beat that kicks the song off and can be heard throughout the song. The track is full of flirty lyrics about dancing and having a good time that match the upbeat tempo of the song; coupled together, they will get you tapping your foot and jamming along to every note. And ‘Back Beat’ is not just the name of this track but rather a musical term. A back beat is defined as ‘a steady pronounced rhythm stressing the second and fourth beats of a four-beat measure’ (Merriam-Webster). Furthermore the Encyclopedia of Percussion says that backbeats make songs ’eminently danceable,’ something that Derhak’s ‘Back Beat’ definitely is, both lyrically and sonically.
Casey also released the official music video for the song, which features his wife, Andrea. You may also recognize her from Eric Paslay’s video for ‘Song About A Girl.’ The video was filmed in Florida such as Jupiter hotspot Guanabanas and West Palm Beach. Knowing that the video features Casey and his wife is definitely an ‘awww’ sort of thing, but even if you didn’t know the woman is his wife, you would enjoy the video as it accurately depicts ‘Back Beat.’
‘Back Beat’ is a must add to your playlists, especially for summer 2016. It’s a type of song you can crank with your windows down or blare at the beach. We’ve already added it to our playlists as we love it that much. It’s the epitome of ‘flow-country,’ Make sure you bring that ‘deep south sweet sound’ to your life with Casey Derhak’s ‘Back Beat.’
Favorite Lyrics: Rockin’ that back beat, baby. Can you feel it coming on strong? Cranking’ that deep south sweet sound. Every move you make is turning me on…
